That British survival golok is growing on me.

If I buy one can I ship it off to you for some convexing?

Man, I tell you this, every time I've seen you post pictures of blades you've redone, I like them. I *need* to clean my garage, get a workbench and a belt sander, and learn to do that myself! Heck, if I'm going do that, I might as well add a bench grinder a vise, and a few other things. Every man needs a decent workshop.

AMEN!!!

The final belt is so fine, it is like stropping. Yes, I occasionally hand strop to touch up a blade.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

Nice work, Vic! Those are some real smooth & even looking grinds! You need to get some steel and make a few blades of your own. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Looks like we've got some great chop offs coming up, I can't wait! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

I better go get some more Beer and Popcorn! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Yes. I need to get some more course grit belts for big jobs like that. I was using up all my crappy 80 grit wood sanding belts. Went through 3 of them on that golok. I'll replace them with some better ones from Lee Valley. I'm betting this Brit golok will out chop the BRKT now.

Just one thing. That steel seems a bit soft. It doesn't hold a sharp edge like the American 1095 that Ontario uses. But it does chop. You don't need super sharp steel to chop, just enough force and a proper edge profile.

No problem.
It will be used in the field where I will probly only have a small stone to maintain the edge, used like a file on machetes.
It it tramontina soft?

No, I can't really measure the hardness, but I'd guess it is a bit harder than that. Probably around 52 to 54 RC.

This site rocks for having people who really know and want to learn the aspects of how blades truly work. We have several really cool threads like this one going right now.

That Barkie machete is very hot.

The Ontario is awesome for the same reason a modded scrapyard CG is. It has really good materials but no skilled labour so it is cheap but if you will do the work you can have the best possible knife.

This is nothing new. The Scandinavians have been buying high quality knife blades and doing the rest themselves for decades maybe centuries.

They would buy as good a quality steel blade as possible and do the rest from blade edge ,finish ,handle and sheath over the long winter.

Here is a example from the far northern part of Scandinavia where they left the steel as it was delivered.
The big knife is primarily for draw cuts in heavy gloves and is quite thin for performance.

Since I am posting Skandi porn here is the most iconic of skandis. If this was a Busse it would be a SHSH with the flatheads.
[Linked Image from img2.putfile.com]
CS made a copy that would be OK if it was 100$ but it is 500$

Here is a much much better copy ,more of a homage and about 120$. The Helle anniversary knife.
I tried and failed to get one in Canada.

Since I am dwelling on knives I almost got a guy on BF wanted to trade me this fr my extra Mutt but had given up and sold it off cheap about 5 minutes before I got in touch.
It is a thinner hard use knife of a sort of skandi style.

Fallkniven actually sells just blades but they are nearly as much as knives and only in Europe.

This is a neat buffalo handled bushcrafty knife which is the bastard son of skandis but instead of being made by eco minded Englishmen this one is made by Nepali Kamis who usually make kukuris.

Yes i missed out on a bunch of these cheap just because I never got around to it.
