I've been watching those vids and they are straight forward, informative and the guy who does them seems like a good honest guy.
I def like them.

I really like the versse shelter idea. Im gonna put one together when i have the extra cash.

I was suprised the wool blanket supported him.
def. cool and easy.
I never can keep track of all those comlicated knots and lines and stuff.
bungee cords... BRILLIANT!

Yea i was shocked about the hammock part to. I'm about 270 pounds i don't think i want to try that hahhaha.

I really want to give the bow drill a try. The fire piston is a really neat idea to.

as simple and straight forward as this stuff is on camera i guarantee ya it wont be as easy going your first time out,trying it in the field.at least some of it.

remember,this guy has done it a bunch of times and has it perfected.

try it out and see what works best for you in your area.you may find you need a larger tarp or possibly two of them which would still be feasible.

maybe you dont have as many trees in your area so you may need more than 6 tent poles or what-not.

all-in-all good stuff and i really like his versa shelter idea.

I totally agree with you. I was thinking to myself that a bigger tarp would be best for me. I also plan on adding more tent polls and bungee cords.

I have never started a fire using bush craft techniques before so i plan on practicing a lot.

Can't wait to give this all a crack. This is something i don't plan on jumping into blindly.

different people would have different opinions on what "bushcraft" techniques would be.

to me its using anything besides a BIC lighter.

if the bugs arent eating me alive,the sun going down or the rain coming in and i have the time i like to start the fire using bushcraft techniques which to me is using a firesteel.

my favorite way is to cover cotton balls in vasoline and bring a few with me.

since only the outside of the cotton ball is covered in vasoline the inside is still dry so i open it up and one or two strikes from a steel lights it up every time.

its a well known method i'm sure you know but it REALLY works and is practically impervious to water.

thats about as far as i go.i have no desire or intention on rubbing two sticks together.

LOL northern. Yes i have seen andys post on using cotton balls with petro jelly on them. I think he stuff his cotton balls in a straw and melts the tips to keep them dry and what not.

Learning to use a bow drill looks both frustrating and fun all at the same time. I do plan on keeping a fire steel on me at all times and learning to use it. I have never used either one so practice makes perfect i hope.

Yeah, I have a bunch like that in my survival kits, pockets of coats, etc. for emergency use. I also use the straws filled with salt, first aid cream, etc.

For usual use though, I use a pill fob with cotton balls. This is a magnum one that holds 7 jumbo cotton balls. I bought this one years ago on eBay, it's the most heavy duty one I've seen. You can buy similar cheaper/thinner/lighter ones at Walmart (pharmacy) or CVS.


I also have some of the standard size pill fobs for my smaller firesteels. I also carry one on my keys with meds in it. Don't forget pocket lint as another fire starter you usually have with you. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Today i was bored and thought i would try and start a small fire using flint and steel. After a few tries i got a small fire going. Pretty neat. Ill keep at it till i can make good constant fires.

I really want to learn the bow drill method. The only problem im having at the moment is finding wood to make a decent fire board. I can't just start chopping at the trees here cause i live in an apartment complex.

Any suggestion?

I know alot of you have posted about his awhile back. I did do a search and didnt come up with anything. I think the post where way to old and gone now.
