horn dogs unit?!

Laugh all you want, but sometimes finding something like that is hard as hell in Canada.

Not a lot of stores carry "specialized" items. So, for example if you're into loading your own ammo for your rifles/shotguns, and you don't live near the Bass Pro in Toronto, or some other large city with a similar store, you gotta search online for someone who will sell and ship to you over the Net.

If you're into sharpening your knife collection, and aren't happy with the idea of buying an annoying-piece-of-crap-imitation-of-what-you-guys-have from Canadian Tire, you've gotta do some serious online searching to find a store somewhere else that'll have what you want and sell & ship to you in Canada.

Sadly, if you're into a hobby that's specialized and not mainstream popular, it's hard to find the stuff you need. Prime example, you guys talk about Tuf-cloth all the time. I've been trying to find a Canadian supplier of this stuff, yet no luck so far. I've gone to Home Depot, Canadian Tire, Home Hardware, Kent Building Supplies, and so on and so forth. As yet, none carry it. You see my dilemma now?

BTW, BrianA, very nice set up you got. I like that Scandi edge.

I live in a small town in the boonies of Saskatchewan so I feel you Tyger.
I HATE HATE HATE HATE Chinese tire. Awful service and crap from china overpriced
and not even the stuff of big city CT's here at ours.

I got really lucky and found a great old 1x42 Norton grinder. It is loud and scary
and once in a while throws a belt but it is fantastic compared to the little harbour freight ones.

A good example of how bad we get screwed as canadians is my mom wants a nice kitchen aid mixer. It is 349$ but you get 40$ off at Amazon. Here in Canada
it is 700$ at Sears. Now you would think that we could simply buy it from Amazon but they are not allowed to sell it to Canadians not by a law but because Kitchenaid tells them to so SEARs can continue ripping us off. I am cleverer than that though so we bought one from Amazon and had it sent to my bestus buddy in the US who has then shipped it to us. Even with 70$ shipping and another 30$ duty and tax is is still 300$ cheaper.

Free market my bum

Even worse is the Can Am quad my cousin bought is 5 grand cheaper in the US and the [censored] thing is made in CANADA! It is not the dollar either as ours is worth more than the US dollar right now.

Free markets are really only an advantage to big business. They send our jobs to mexico while having monopolistic deals like the one between kitchenaid and Sears.

I just realized I went ranting way off topic on my own thread.

In the interest in getting back on topic i can tell you guys about the 99 year old Ross bayonet i got that was a broken ball of rust. I ground off the broken
bayonet lugs and rust ,made new maple scales and re did the edge and finish.
I am almost finished and just need to do the edge on the new edge pro and I will be sending it out for a new sheath. Opps I forgot I need to do some finish work and varnish or linseed oil on the handle as well.

Well, I finally bit the bullet and decided to go after one of my scrapyards - the Yard Keeper (Thanks for the heads up KnifeGuy)

You can see in pics 2 and 3 where I didn't quite get enough grind next to the choil, but I was starting to wear the coating pretty high on the blade. Also, there's still some fine scratches here and there (needed to strop more I guess). Tools used were mousepad and sandpaper up to 2000 grit (started at 150 for shaping), and an old leather belt with some mother's billet polish (it was laying around, and I don't have any stropping compound yet).

I wish I didn't eat into the coating so much, but I had to lay the knife down pretty low to get rid of the back bevel. I also had to make about three different runs at different angles to get what I think is a reasonable convex (although the last pass did seem kind of steep). I wonder if the mouse pad is too stiff? Wouldn't solve the problem when going to the leather strop, and I'm agraid of rounding over the edge.

So how sharp is the final product? Well, it slices easily thru a scrap of the leather belt I chopped off the end, and takes hair off the arm (it does feel kinda "grabby" - you can feel it grab each hair). I did shave a bit on the face - that left much to be desired

I might go after the DMDC next, but I might buy a power sharpener before going after the Infi stuff and the Dogfather. Does using a power sharpener cut down on the amount of wearing on the coating at all (assuming correct technique)? What I really want is a DFLE (maybe in the third dowbowl? ) and an ASH 1 DC or LE.

(Dogfather not shown as it would make the other knives look puny and jealous )
