The Forest Service claims there is a shelter at the junction of a river and creek in one of the large valleys near where we live. I've been in the area several times and have never seen it but it seemed like a good thing to seek out with one of the offspring. So off we went.

Here's some shots of the river on the way up the trail:

This looks like a good place to play:

Here's what's left of the shelter; time to update the map!

My Bird Dog is on holiday getting some pants made by Martin Swinkels. You may have seen his work on Rat Chat, bladeforums or here at his blog http://martinsheaths.blogspot.com/ He does great work and if you need a sheath for your Bird Dog or Swamp Rats, drop him a line. Anyways, I took out this old Smith & Wesson that used to belong to my Dad and gave it some fresh air.

We stopped here for lunch:

And a few flowers:

We had a great time; thanks for looking!

Very nice pics. So what happened to that shelter?

I think the shelter was wiped out years ago by a flood; none of the old-timers I know remember it ever standing. These logs were about 25 yards from the most likely site it would have sat, where there was another large, chinked log.
A hundred years ago this trail was built for access to mines further up the valley but no one can recall the shelter. I knew it wasn't there but I wanted to search for wreckage anyways. It made a good destination to point to on the map for the five-year-old as well, she likes to know where we're going <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />
