I am a recent convert/addict and would like to sharpen up my new collection of SY knives. Does anyone have a list of the factory angles for each of the SY knives? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

I don't think anyone has the exact angles, only rough estimates.

I'd say my DMCG, is around 42 degrees total. I use a spyderco sharpmaker and it took me a couple hours to grind down the shoulders.

What sharpening system are you using? Are you familiar with magic marker trick? It's where you use a marker and color in the edge, and sharpen with whatever you use and you can see where it is making contact.

I just picked up a Sharpmaker and tried it on a few kitchen knives with mixed results. I'll try the marker trick. Thanks.

The Yard edges are hand ground by eye and do vary.. From the factory they are VERY obtuse and course. Unless you just want to beat concrete to death you'll need to reprofile them. The positive is sr77 responds well to abrasion so even a Lansky kit can do the reprofile and give you a nice sharp (strong) edge.

The marker trick is the best advice I ever picked up on a forum..

What Paul said.

I just recently finished re-profiling the edge of my DMLE to a 20 degree with my Lansky kit. The only thing I might add is that you should pick up the diamond hones for the kit, because they make taking the extra material off a lot easier.

I haven't decided yet if I'm going to pick up the diamond rods for the Sharpmaker or drop the hammer on a belt grinder, maybe both. I like the idea of using the sharpmaker for flat grinds on my folders and the belt grinder for convex edges on my fixed. I'm getting better after playing with the Sharpmaker, I got a few kitchen knives shaving sharp now. Just need a Bird Dog or Mudpup to round out the kitchen set.
