That's a great idea Chris, and one that tyger75 shares with you. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

PK, you ruined my surprise! LOL!

They just came in yesterday; cost me $42.21 in duty, but they were worth it! The BDLE is gonna be my knife for duck hunting, and the salmon season, both of which start next month. Yum, I can't wait! Nothing tastes better than game you caught yourself!

The two MPLEs, well, one is for me, the other is going to go to my oldest nephew. He's ten right now, and he'll be accompanying me on the turkey hunt next year. If I feel the time is right, he may get it in time for the fall deer hunt; he wants to go out in the field for that as well. He's becoming a real woodsman!

Every woodsman should have a knife; I was given my first knife when I was eight by my grand dad. My nephew lives in New Brunswick, with plenty of forested land around his house, he'll have fun whittling and such with it. I trust him enough to know how to be responsible with a knife. He'll probably become the youngest member of the SYK crew! LOL!

The Busse kitchen knife is called a "NICK". There was a fat one and a skinny one.

They're beautiful knives.

I haven't made up my mind on 154cm yet.

Well, it would depend more on what the knife was designed for than what material it was made out of. I am more of a match the steel to the blade style kind of guy than I am a Stainless vs. Carbon steel guy.

Example: I wouldn't have any use for a .275" thick Scrapper-6 or Scrapper-7 that was made out of 154CM. In my opinion it just isn't the right steel for that kind of knife. Would it work, sure it would. Would it be ideal, absolutely not! A knife with that kind of grind in that thickness is going to be a knife that people are going to want to be a do it all sharpened pry bar kind of tool and a steel like SR-77, 5160, 52100 would be MUCH better choice.

Now, a knife like the RatManDu is closer to being compatible with 154CM in my opinion, and I might even buy one if it were to be made. I do however think that the Busse kin should take advantage of the 154CMs qualities if they were to make a knife the size of the RatManDu, or even a smaller knife with 154CM again, and go ahead and make it thinner stock. They do not all have to be super thick. My Mudpuppy is .190" thick right at the handle and about .140"-.150" an inch or so back from the tip. I would love to have a Mudpuppy with a thinner blade profile. Or, a series of slicers that all had thinner profiles. They wouldn't have to be kitchen knives, but maybe an all around camper/caper knife for food prep as well as gutting and skinning. Something with a drop point and about a four inch blade length with plenty of belly to it and a mudder handle.

Another thing, that pile of 154CM is screaming for somebody to make a necker out of it! What better time could there ever be for the ScrapYard to introduce a nice necker along the lines of the Swamp Warden in 154CM. If ever there was a knife design that calls for the use of a good stainless it's a necker.

All good points! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

A Swarden style 154CM Scrap necker would be a good use/steel choice.

I love the look of those knives as well; my fave design for cooking, santoku knives.

I saw an ad on the BFE where a guy was selling a pair of those, but he's asking an astronomical price for them. If my last name was "Trump", maybe I'd buy them! LOL!

The two large knives I have used the most are made from Stainless Steel and I have never had any problems. My Frank Vought Outfitter is made from ATS 34 with .25 inch stock and at 8 inches long has been used to chop just about anything in wood.....I don't do Breeze blocks for fun or hammer the knife through metal bars I admit...but who on earth would? I used this in Borneo on some pretty hard wood and in Africa....so long as you keep the edge at 40 degrees and not finer there is no roll and it lasts a very long time. The heat treatment I think is the key to getting the best performance.

Prior to using this knife I used a Blackjack Maurader....this is in 440C Stainless and again had a good heat treated blade which could take a hell of an edge and came with an edge which was superb. My knife had a single edge and no back bevel. I gave it to a friends son who went for P Company selection and have no digital photo's of it....I think this was pre digital times anyway...but here is a nice photo of the double edged version.

[Linked Image from i343.photobucket.com]

The guy whose knife this is gave his a good bit of use with no worries in military service ....the single edged version was also the preferred blade of Maj John Plaster USAR who served as a sniper in the US Army Special Forces/MACV-SOG and later as an internationally respected instructor.

Good heat treated Stainless Steel can make a great cohopper.

If Dan would do a single edge blade of similar Bolo design either in 154CM or SR77 I would'nt have any qualms at all about buying either.

A 7" blade would be nice. Something along the lines of the old scalping knives. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

JYD#14 Do you need one, of course you do it's a knife and you like knives.....

I voted yes to the larger knives. If I liked the design I would not have any problem buying it in 154CM.

I think its easy to become biased against large blades because we tend to look back at our experiences with small thin ATS34/154CM blades at high Rcs.

I voted that I would try big blades simply because I assumed that the hardness would be dialed back appropriately and the blade steel would still be relatively thick. As steel fan has shown, under those circumstances things should be fine.

It looks like a majority of those particapting in the the poll would buy a large knife from SYKCO or SRKW in 154CM. I knew I would, but I think it is safe to say that many others would as well. I'd hate to see all that fine steel just sit there in the scrap yard.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.
