I have experienced being held down and suffocated by some unseen physical force while asleep. I am certain to this day that the force was spiritual in nature. As a few friends of mine have experienced the same, I figure we must have been smoking the same bad stuff at the time...

This is similar to Night terrors some children experience(myself included). Science has recently determined that the part of your brain that controls breathing actually falls asleep and the feeling of suffocation is exactly that. Your conscious mind wakes up and has to wake up that part of the brain that controls breathing. The brain usually learns that this is a bad thing to do and they outgrow it. Perhaps something you were doing caused your brain to forget and get sleepy.

Scariest thing ever some of the guys talk about was when we were overseas. First couple weeks we were in Afcrackistan, 8 people to a tent, so we all hear each other while we're sleeping.

Everyone is trying to get acclimated to the weather, the noise, the conditions, etc. I'm noticing my tentmates seem pretty tired all the time, so I mention to them they should get to bed earlier, and let their bodies adjust to the time change and all that jazz. They give me this scared look, and just say,"Uh, yeah, maybe we'll do that."

So, about two weeks later, they're all still looking pretty much like the living dead, and the Warrant Officer comes up to me and asks if I've had enough fun scaring the crap out of my tentmates! I look at him, completely confused, and ask what the heck he's talking about??

First night there, they apparently thought I was crying in my sleep. As they're laying there, trying to get to sleep and figure what to do with this "weakling", they come to the realization that I'm not crying, I'm giggling; and not like a silly little girl, but like that guy in the movies, who's just lost all sanity and killed off all his mates, you know!?! This has been going on for about a week and a half before they decide to involve the chain of command, because they're afraid I'm dreaming of getting the chance to kill them in their sleep! LOL! I couldn't believe it; sure, this was the first time I'd served with this guys outside of the home unit and all, but I figured they'd know me a little better than that!

So the Warrant shakes his head, tells me to go see the medics, and get some sleeping pills that'll hopefully knock me into a deep enough sleep that I'm not terrifying the guys with my "night giggles". They worked; I was late a few times to shift because the pills were so strong, but the Warrant let it slip, since it was allowing the others to adjust to me and get some sleep as well!

What do you think?? I never knew I was a night giggler! LOL!

Could have been a great way to get a tent to yourself tho Tyger!

One of the most common knock backs for guys going on selection for Special Forces here is snoring loudly....it can compromise everyone....

Hard to bear because you cannot control how you sleep....never heard of giggling before....although there was a guy who earned his nickname whilst sleeping....he got rather excited whilst dreaming and was offered extra doses of Bromine.... he must have had those pretty women dreams down to a fine art!

Well right now I would welcome a better ability to sleep....staying up till the early hours too often because of the time differences over here and the urge to keep up to the pace with the Yard Bowl....9.00 pm Eastern is 3.00 am GMT....I am starting to feel the pace. Tyger....are you nocturnal? You seem to pull some late night stints!

I've become used to very little sleep for long periods of time.

When I was overseas, I was working solid 12 to 17 hour work days, just trying to keep up with the workload that was coming down on me and the other 2 guys I worked with. I'd essentially just crash on the occasional day we were given off. Of course, a boatload of caffeine helps, too! LOL! I tell you though, the three of us were burnt out and glad to see the end of that tour.

I will admit, I am more of a night person than I am a morning person. I don't go hiding in a corner screaming,"The light! IT burns! IT burns!", but I do love to sleep in! LOL!

Nowadays, I usually go to bed somewhere around 1 or 2 in the morning, and I'm up to go to work at about 5:45 in the morning, as it's a solid 34 minute highway drive to my base.

On weekends, I'll go to bed whenever, sometimes when I see the sun starting to peek out! LOL!

Gotta love it, eh? LOL!

Most people think I'm nuts, but I like the quiet, and the wildlife that comes out at night. most people in my neighborhood don't even realize how many wild animals live in our area. Deer, foxes, rabbits, raccoons, skunks (could do without them! LOL!), patridge, turkey, ducks, and a couple of times bears (Eeep! )... I've seen all of these in my little area in just the last couple months, and enjoy watching them, and of course maybe wishing that I lived with a few less neighbors... wild game tastes far better than store bought, after all.
