Fantastic post Tyger and some yummy looking fish but you could not wait 1 more day until I safely had my BD socked away before letting people know how good it was?

Sorry Unsub; I may have made it hard for myself to get one for my dad as well! Eeep! And he's serious about taking mine!

BTW: is this fly fishing you're doing?
or do you use spinning gear or something?

and is this from shore???

We did our fishing from shore; there are large banks that lead out into the lake and up and down the stream, making it ideal for shore fishing these guys as they swim upstream to lay their eggs and all.

Dad and I were using a couple of my Abu Garcia and Okuma spinning reels on 7' Okuma rods. I had eight pound test line on mine; dad went with a 12 pound test line on his.

Oddly, he had the heavier line, but kept having the fish break off his line all night. He probably hooked over a dozen fish, but all of them either slipped the hook, or broke it off. He was having an off night. He's hoping to have a better one next weekend.

We were using half ounce egg weights, that were slip knotted about 12 -14 inches up from the small bait hook (A laserbeak #10 or 12, depending on what we felt like using), which then had the row/roe sack (as seen in the last pic) on it. We tied a bunch of different sizes, varying from 4 up to 8 eggs in the mesh with at least one float ball per 2 eggs. We also soaked some in Garlic oil, and others in some Star Anise extract (Black Licorice smell). I honestly found I had more hits off the Anise extract scented eggs than anything else.

Pretty crazy, huh?

I'm glad you guys like the pics; hopefully, I'll have some more up next weekend.

Hey Rainwalker, sorry to tease you and all. But, you know, when you're done making those sheaths for me, you could hand deliver them to me up here, and I'll be sure to have some Salmon and apropriate veggies and beer waiting for you!

cool!
I thought you would be fly fishing. (glad you're not )
I really want an abu garcia, I'll probably pick up a revo (baticasting reel) sometime.

rods...
I wish I had a clue... so far I just like my 6'10" shimano crucial.
good rod for the money.

Don't know if I'd use a baitcasting reel for salmon, but to each their own. Who knows? It might work for you.

As for rods, if you're shore fishing, something with good flexibility is very important, and it doesn't need to be longer than 7 feet.

If you live near a Bass Pro, go into the store, check out the rods they have there and find one you like. You don't have to buy one there, I just find they have a wider selection to look through and find what I want to eventually buy. Any store with a good large selection of rods will help you find something you like. Grip, casting feel, just the way the rod feels as you're moving with it, will help decide your equipment. If you're not comfortable and happy with your gear, it'll show in your fishing. It doesn't have to be top notch, just right for you.

I knew the BDLE would be awesome at cleaning salmon. I'm planning a trip to Kodiak Island, AK next summer to do just that (chinook/king)!

Tyger,

WOW What a great haul you had fishing! When I compare that to the Large Mouth Bass we get here in Wisconsin I am blown away! Those things are HUGE!!

And all that caviar they yielded! What a bounty on top of the Salmon steaks you are now sitting on! Great bait balls indeed! You really had a great day fishing!

That is really the way to relax. A nice cigar and a pole ,yanking fish in the boat as fast as you can bait the lines.Only had that fun a handful of times but sometimes the wait is what you need to teach you patience. I used to worry a lot but now I have learned to be much more patient in my personal life and fishing I know has taught me plenty about being patient!

Using the Bird Dog as a fillet knife!!????!! Unheard of! It's supposed to be for slicing corn off the stalk isn't it? And digging out pesky weeds from your lawn and garden right?
That's all I use mine for so far! Perhaps I'll take the Tyger challenge and use it on some fresh fish and see how it holds up!

I know that since I put a keen edge on mine I have yet to re-sharpen it! And I have used it as a garden tool almost exclusively! Takes a edge and holds it like no other 154CM I own! Great stuff Dan made.

Well done Tyger, and thanks so much for sharing!

Peace.

Great fishing tale Tyger...I am with POP on the uses I would have for this knife...unless I took up fishing...

You make it look easy....did it with my Dad as a kid but the "bug" did'nt bite...I guess you need a bit of "Canada's vast healthy wilderness" to make it work...the rivers in the North East GB where I grew up probably were too polluted around the estuary to enable many to get through....Rainbow Trout were the best catch I made LOL!
