A Mod 7 in CM154/kydex would make a great SCUBA knife....Dan??? Anyone given SR77 much "wet" use? If you looked after it, it might work....?

I just did an "I'll take it" on another MOD 7. It appears that they reallocated the first position sheath to a DMLE, replacing it with a custom kydex + Teklok. It's been sharpened, so I guess I'll consider it my user.

I have a MOD 7, and I was wondering if it was a legit one or not.
Is there any way to tell just by looking at the knife to be sure it isn't a good looking copy? What makes you doubt it's authentic? Take a look at the release posting (link above) and the other picture in this thread. That SY logo is stamped into the blade, and MODs have old-style Busse Combat Basic handles -- Is there a counterfeit Scrap Yard ring out there I haven't heard about?

Thanks; I keep telling myself that I'm saving up for Knob Creek, but I don't appear to be listening.

I guess I was wondering if there WERE any counterfeits roaming around out there. It looks like it should, but it was not very sharp when I rec'd it in the mail from the guy. Are scrapyards usually only kinda sharp when they are new? Also, there was some very minimal rust spotting on the blade. How rust prone is SR77?

Scrapyards can vary from very sharp to not so sharp from the factory. The DC finish is more prone to rusting than the other finishes due to micro pitting from the process.

Thanks Ted.
What steps should one take to minimize this from happening again after the rust is removed?

SR77 and SR101 are both high carbon steels that do rust; INFI is also classified as a carbon steel, but has proven to be stain resistant. I recall a thread where uncoated corrosion comparisons were done and SR77 was identified as developing surface rust fairly easily, but that the rust did not pit the blade nearly as much as SR101.
Most recommendations were to use a coating of non-animal fat based oil (like olive oil) so that it won't go rancid or be poisonous if you intent to prep food with your knife. A lot of folks swear by a wiping down the blade with a Marine Tuff Cloth. Others have also said that if you just wipe the blade with a dry cloth after use, that's been good enough for them.

I have a Kydex sheath for the MOD 7 and I think it sucks.
The thing is soooo tight that It messes up the handle every time I have to yank it out. It is so difficult to remove that it is almost unsafe.
I want a new sheath.
Is the Scrapper 6 sheath on the store good for the MOD 7? Anyone have suggestions as to where I could get a nice sheath (either leather or nylon) for the MOD 7?
thanks!
