So how it is done? I saw a post by Horndog that said he used a scotch brite wheel (fine), but damned if I can find one locally. So I went online and found a variety of scotch brite wheels. I think the one that is used for making a satin finish is the multi finishing wheel, but that is just by looking at Horndog's pic. there is also the high strength disc, but it only comes in medium and very fine. Any other tips appreciated.

You can do it by hand with sandpaper. Start with a relatively coarse grit, maybe 600 or so, and work the metal in one direction only. Then progressively move to finer grits, working in the same direction. By the time you get to 2000 grit, it should look pretty good, but to take it further get some polishing cloth and a paste like Flitz.

I finished a Ranger knife like that a couple of years ago. It came out well, but took a few hours.

Even by the time you get to 600 it is pretty good but the scotchbrite wheel is a
million times easier. I love a nice polish but the scotchbrite satin is nice ,
tough , and easy to repair. I like it much better than the coated finish.

I have used both kinds, polarbare. Keep your knuckles away from the high strength one! The wheels are not cheap, but they have made the single best improvement in my steel finishing of anything I have used. With these wheels on a small 1/2" arbor grinder, you can maintain a nice finish on even scratched up and well-used knives. Good investment. I found mine at MSC/J&L Metalworking.
