Where does the 1 meter limit come from? There are no blade limits in the Criminal Code up here.

Spring assist such as Speed-Safe is legal. Knives which open ONLY by the push of a button or level on the handle are illegal.

"Concealed" blades such as the familiar dagger in a hair brush is illegal unless the overall length exceeds 30cm.

Oh, and belt buckle knives are frowned upon as well.

I have had my Fenix P3D in my pocket or bag on several flights last year. No issues.

I have a 2xCR123 Ultrafire LED flashlight that travels with me everywhere in my laptop bag. Has never been an issue.

The USPS website has the lists of all prohibited mailed items for every country.

- Thanks for the correction on the spring assist one; I forgot to add that in. My bad, for being hasty and sloppy in my post.
- I hadn't heard about the concealed hairbrush blades; again, I've gotta find that book I have, referencing the restrictions of what they can & cannot seize items on. It was one they provided to a group of us going overseas to KAF, itemizing what we could & could not send home, and the reasons why.
- Don't recall seeing the thing about buckle knives either; again, gotta find that book.
- The reason we were given reference the one meter length limit was pretty vague; something about anything over that size being a questionable requirement for most Canadian citizens, and not being listed as a tool, but a weapon. He was mentioning about requiring paperwork verifying status as a collector, and a bunch of other garbage.

Again, some of the rules we were given, like the one meter length, do not cause the blade to be listed as illegal; they are merely conditions that they can utilize to hold your item for further investigation and/or seizure.

That's our government, leaving loopholes so they can "Cahum", you-know-what-us, up the you-know-where.

Here is your best reference, the actual federal law:
The Criminal Code:
http://canlii.org/ca/sta/c-46/whole.html

Section 84, definition of prohibited weapon:
Quote
“prohibited weapon” means

(a) a knife that has a blade that opens automatically by gravity or centrifugal force or by hand pressure applied to a button, spring or other device in or attached to the handle of the knife, or

(b) any weapon, other than a firearm, that is prescribed to be a prohibited weapon;

And of course the weapons regulations here:
http://canlii.org/ca/regu/sor98-462/whole.html

Relevant parts:
Part 3:
Quote
Former Prohibited Weapons Order, No. 4

8. The device known as the “Constant Companion”, being a belt containing a blade capable of being withdrawn from the belt, with the buckle of the belt forming a handle for the blade, and any similar device.

9. Any knife commonly known as a “push-dagger” that is designed in such a fashion that the handle is placed perpendicular to the main cutting edge of the blade and any other similar device other than the aboriginal “ulu” knife.

10. Any device having a length of less than 30 cm and resembling an innocuous object but designed to conceal a knife or blade, including the device commonly known as the “knife-comb”, being a comb with the handle of the comb forming a handle for the knife, and any similar device.

The regulations also outline definition of brass knuckles and a number of other prohibited items.

Hope this helps, and yes I have spent a lot of time reading those things. I try to be really careful of what I bring in and I wanted to be sure that the BARFs made it here safe and sound! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

i'm glad i live in the same country that all my favirite knife companies are located in.i feel really sorry for the busse fans in europe where knives are frowned upon much more than in canada or the states.

the MPLE was probably the first scrapyard knife legal to own in some parts of europe.that doesnt mean you can carry it though.

I believe that Customs only randomly opens packages unless something draws their attention.
I would also think that a smaller package containing a smaller knife may get their attention quicker.
Most prohibited knives in Canada are smaller such as switchblades and balisongs, so Customs might be more inclined to open smaller packages
They may also been simply acting as tax collectors and saw the name of a business on the package and figured they needed to collect the GST

I have had no problems but Rooikat was sending me a kitchenaid mixer(present for my Mom and less than half price in the US)and they asked him if it could not be delivered did he want it completly destroyed?

I have had several swords over 1 metre and the only thing was there was an oversize package charge.

As opposed to partially? WTH does that mean, they didn't want to return to sender?

I think there is an option on customs forms that asks if the sender wants to pay return shipping in the event it gets turned back.

I guess the clerk took a unique approach to the question! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Well, presumably, if you crush it to dust first it fits in a smaller and therefore cheaper box for the return trip...
