Too many Sheeple around. Makes me nervous.
I can't understand them and they don't understand me.
But, no, I don't know many that understand or appreciate my hobby.
I have an uncle and a cousin that probably do. But, I don't see them much.
Most people I know would consider $50 a HIGH price for a knife. And yeah "Buck" knife might be about the extent of "Half" of those that know what a "Buck" knife is.
I mentioned the approximate price of one of my Benchmade folders to some people the other day and they looked quite dumb-founded. And these are people that also have nice homes, drive BMW's, and spend WAY more on little electronic gadgets for themselves and their kids that are replaced or broken with a few months.
-----------------------------
In all fairness though, it is very hard to understand what we pay for our knives..... even for myself sometimes.
Especially, when the prices start to get $250, $500, $750+
Let's try to be "realistic" for a minute. Super fancy steel or not, these are just slabs of steel that have been sharpened and have a handle put on them.
Sure, some are nicely finished and some have certain amazing qualities. But, to someone who EVEN KNOWS and understands steel, you can buy all kinds of functional blades with tough properties or good edge properties or quality finish for way less than many of us pay.
Yes, as enthusiasts, we are paying exponentially more for fractionally more improvements in many cases. "Bang for the Buck".... Debateable... - Think about it. $70 - $120 or so for a Res-C handled piece of SR-77 might be a "Bang for the Buck" compared to INFI. But, I can't consider $70 - $120 cheap either. For our level of expectations, it is a reasonable decent value though.... maybe.
I can't even talk the values of guns to most people.
But, most people WAY more understand the cost of a gun (whether they like them or not) vs. knives of similar prices.
Try explaining:
NMFBMLE vs. Kimber Ultra CDP II
Or
A Itty Bitty Bear Cub "HACK" fingernail tool vs. .... well millions of things for WAY less and much more sane justifications for moeny.
Or
NMFBMLE vs. MANY items considered high dollar and high value items by most people such as: NEW High End computer, Hi-Def 50" widescreen, Most any high end stereo receive, amp, speakers, reasonably nice pieces of furniture, etc. etc.
-----------
I get annoyed by Sheeple for "fearing" a freakin "TOOL" like a knife or gun.
But, realisitically, I can understand why they have issue with "Some" of the prices.
-----------
Imagine trying to explain this to a friend or "Wife" :

Man I have over a hundred knives and most people would consider "ME" crazy... But, there are a few "Hogs" with collections like this.
That has to be about $70,000 - $120,000 worth of "sharpened pieces of steel with handles"...... and "SAFE QUEENS" at that.
..... yeah... I don't think this guy has a wife.
Some of us could easily be referred to as having obssessive-compulsive dissorders and compulsive hoarding dissorders. It would be a "Fair" and "Accurate" statement. And I include myself in this. Probably what saves me from being much worse is being broke (running out of money spent on knives. .... And I still have a LONG wish list.
------------
This forum stuff has "CLEARLY" become one of my compulsive dissorders. I have so much other stuff that should be prioritized right now.
