Going on day 13 without electricity in Houston creates some MAJOR in home humidity issues. I noticed the humidity, but somehow didn't think about some of my more rust-prone knives.

I have preached a few times about the hazards of leaving rust prone steel in cars. People seem to know about leaving them outside. But, the humidity and temperature inside of cars fluctuates as much as outside.

Inside homes with A/C is different as A/C units draw moisture out of the air (air "conditioning" <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> )

Many of my rust prone knives are protected with Ren-Wax.

But, I just pulled out my CE Hell Razor and it has black rust all up in the CBT grooves, false edge (rough grinds <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> ) and more. I can't see well in my office. I have a very dim 25 watt lamp light as I am running minimal draw off my neighbors front porch outlet.

I had read a lot of posts about the CE finishes being more prone to rust. Jerry mentioned something about "decarb". I kept meaning to clean my Hell Razor well and put some Ren-Wax. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" /> Now I have to clean up a bunch of rust. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif" alt="" />

My stripped SJTAC and much smoother finish than UGLY CE finish looks likely OK. Hard to see well. My stripped SS4 seems pretty good. It is pretty darn smooth.

I know neither my SJTAC or SS4 have been waxed. So, there must be something about the CE pitted finishes and or Jerry's "Decarb" (??????)

I might be seeing a couple spots on some satin SR-101 (????) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> I thought I had Ren-waxed those, but I may have used and not re-waxed a couple (????) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" />

I have a few custom O1 blades that I am concerned about now. I can't remember if I have waxed everything that needs it or not. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

I will have to do some inspecting and probably cleaning and waxing tomorrow.

It's going to be a PITA to get rust out of those pits and CBT grooves. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> .... Oh well. I knew the CE finish needed a LOT of work to make look worthy anyway. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> .... expensive knife to need such work when "NEW". <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif" alt="" />

I hope not too much rust elsewhere. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crossfingers.gif" alt="" />

[censored] IKE!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />

KG,

I wonder if this stuff would work better than elbow grease or naval jelly:

Thirteen days without juice?! I would be out of my mind. If you are pulling off your neighbor for light does that mean they have power or it's just a generator? I've gone four days without and then I hi-tailed it to my son's a few hours away. I feel for you, man! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

I hope you get this worked out all right KG. If you need a hand with any of it, let us know.

I am the biggest violator on rust prevention, kind of on purpose. I know that I can straighten out just about anything, so I consider it all a big "test." Here are some of the no-no's that I have done on purpose.

- I had an unprotected swamp rat in my truck for over a year. No issues.
- I leave all my knives in leather sheaths. Including sr-101, sr77, A2 and O1.

I don't run the AC in my house unless it is absolutely necessary. Being in MI, I think was a grand total of 5 days this year.

Most trouble I have had is direct water/snow exposure to sr-101, but that was quickly cleaned up with flitz.

I just keep stuff dry, and so far I have not had any issues.

I think it is interesting to hear stories like this.

I have no idea what the CE finish is. Is it like bead blasted? If so, I would expect it to rust easier.

i've had great results with metal glo on removing rust. brush whatever you can off first, then the metal glo on a paper towel should do fine.
