On our hike a few weeks ago, like Northern1, I didn't saddle up my 8 yr old with much weight. His pack is fairly large, but only has a sleeping bag and some light food. So that left me to carry somewhere around 55 lbs with a significant portion of that in steel.

Not more then 1/2 mile into our hike, we found a dead tree to do some chopping on. Clayton(my son) started out with the S6. It worked pretty well, although he soon found out that the CGFBM is much more efficient at chopping.

My son calls these trips 'wilderness survival'... Not exactly, but good practice none the less.. and a great time together.....

My oldest turns six this Sunday. I need to take him on a hike.

Thanks to northern1 and bladz for the inspiration.

Father and son backpacking ... love it! Took my son out a little while ago. Made it as far as the back yard, but it was fun. Going to try the "real" woods (as my son says) next.

BTW, I have the same tent by SD, love it!

Great pics!

Priceless! There is nothing like hanging with your son...unless of course it your daughters and you are teaching them the same values. There is just something about a little guy learning from his Dad...good for you.

Awesome. What knife are you using for the shavings?

looks like a BRAVO-1.

hey, what pack is that your kid is wearing.i want something with a nice waist strap for mine.poor kid lugged the whole thing all the way in and never had a way to take the weight off his shoulders by tightening a waist strap.

thats the key, alternating the load between the waist and shoulders by tightening the waist strap and loosening the shoulder straps, then tightening the shoulder and sternum straps and loosening the waist straps ect. ect.

The knife is the Bravo-1.

The pack is my wifes Osprey. It's an extra small, but still is just a bit long for him. Osprey does make a model for youth called the Jib. It has an awesome adjustable torso length. Pricey though. You are definitely right about alternating the load points. Also, a good pack that locks the weight onto your lumbar area is important. When I get mine adjusted right, I can loosen up the shoulder straps completely to give the upper body a rest.
