Hey, how do you determine a value on a Scrapyard knife? Now I'm ready for the "canned" responses, priceless, worth a million, what ever your willing to pay, etc. but it's serious question.
With limited quantities and such high demand what is a realistic price? I mean Yard Keepers, Dumpster Mutts, etc. are difficult to find at the posted prices on the websites. So I would be interested in what "normal" prices are for the Dumpster Mutts and Yardkeeprs?
Thanks

The value of a Scrapyard knife is the same as most other products traded on an open market.....whatever the buying public is willing to pay. Scrapyard knives are going for one and a half to two times the original purchase price at this time.
No, none of mine are for sale

Normal prices are what Scrap Yard sells them for, abnormal prices is what the market will bear after all inventory has been sold out.
My prices...are what Dan releases them for. And I treat them all with love and disrespect afforded a Scrap Yard Knife.I believe they are worth what Dan charges and I am dang thankful he prices his like Scrappers and NOT like Busse knives. IMHO these Scrap Yard knives are every bit as good as INFI but just different.
I can de-limb thick branches from a pine tree and cut turkey with the same knife later that night. They always exceed my expectations in performance and are worth every penny Dan charges.I'll get one when they come out and be glad to have it!
Peace.

Up to this point I wasn't willing to pay twice the price SY sold them for. Which is why I have no SY steel at this time.
But this new business plan changes things.
If you want a Dog Father, you'll may have to pay more then the guy who originally bought it... or you can now wait until it comes back in the rotation.
Patience will save you some dough.

Go over to BFE and see for yourself. I have. That's sort of my point, if you could buy at anytime the Scrapyard XYZ knife for 79.95 Wouldn't you? But real world I see prices for the same type/same grade Scrapyard knife range from say $100 to $200 ish. Its pretty rare to see one sold by an individual for the "website" price. I'm pretty "up" on knifes just not Scrapyard/Swamprat/Busse's.

Also depends on the desire of people to get that particular model of knife. Prime example is the MPLE, when it was released and sold at a blade show, but no sight of it for a long while on the website (No criticism meant). Dan sold it at the show for $80 USD I believe? If you went to the secondary market, you saw it selling for anywhere between $120 up to one guy I saw selling them for $215 USD!!!! And he sold them all! I'm not saying this will happen with all knives or with a large number of Dans' models; I'm merely saying that the demand for a product will have a large influence on what people will sell it for. Another prime example of this is the SS4; there's so few people willing to sell it (I'll never sell mine!), and so many people wanting one, pricing can go pretty steep on it.

Sorry if it sounds like we're piling on, but my opinion is quite similar. For me there are two prices, what I'm willing to pay and what I'm willing to sell for. Lately, prices have fallen due to the economy and people wanting to generate some cash, but before that, my best example was INFIcoots (I know, you specified Scrap Yard and I could substitute SS4s, but the 'coot was a personal passion). I've paid up to $260 for them (with a sheath), but when they went above $300, I stopped buying. However, that price still wasn't high enough for me to sell.
Personally, I don't often spend much more than release prices unless a knife is limited production. Because I live fairly close to Knob Creek, I get outstanding access to retail Bussekin blades twice per year -- the only place they "bring it" more than KC is Blade. Even if I didn't have that, I'm only about 3-4 hours away from the Indy1500 show, which is 4 times a year. I spend way too much on knives.

I value my SYK knives based on what other knives I have in similar steel and grinds.
