The Battle Rat is an excellent knife, and it was my first knife from the Swamp about 6 years ago. I was lucky enough to buy doubles of my Battle Rat and Camp Tramp, and I would not consider selling them. Perhaps they should be called "Great Knives"!

I just got one in a mail...a black and tan after wanting one for a good while. I'm not sure what I think truthfully. I picked it up and said "My Camp Tramp is king"...maybe the BR is just more than I need?

I think for going big, what I would really like is a AK! Without a lotto win- that ain't gonna happen!

RN,
Your Camp Tramp is an awesome knife for sure, but just wait until you get to use your Battle Rat for some really serious work. I have been lucky enough to purchase three of them. One I sent to my brother as a birthday gift, one is sitting on the shelf awaiting the day when I wear its brother out and the other gets beat up on a regular basis and has earned the respect I have for it the hard way.

I don't have any knives that I don't like, but very few that seriously sit in awe of. The Battle Rat is one of those few. I hope yours will serve you long and well.

yeah, it's a serious blade for sure. But...for better or worse, I only have room for the blades I love in my little collection. So far the keepers are my ss4, howling rat and CT. The others have been bought and sold!

I have been swinging the BR around for a couple days, but I think it's on it's way to feebay while it's still mint or I might snoop for a swap with a batac...we'll see...the car does need new tires! hah!!

i dont know which color combination BR came first.i can only guess the through hardened one came first and the diff heat treated ones came after only because the diff heat treat is obviously an improvement and its not like swamprat to take a step backwards in quality or production.

the whole diff heat treat thing does get in ones head for some reason but in all reality should never become an issue.

i really think both versions are way more knife than a human being could ever break unless they set out on a mission to break it and even then they would need mechanical assistance to really break the knife imo.

of coarse i would prefer a diff HT but i'm not going to loose any sleep over it,i will not treat the knife any differently and i will not notice any difference in performance and/or strength

i like my camp knives to be a bit bigger than the average and i find the length, weight and feel of the BR to be the ultimate camp knife

The Black and tan Through hardened Battle Rats came much later. In fact, I think after they were discontinued.

A Battle Rat was my first Swamp Rat, and I kind of wish I had kept it. I have a Black and Tan which is just as nice.

A Battle Rat was my first Swamp Rat, and I kind of wish I had kept it. I have a Black and Tan which is just as nice.

By combining info from swampshack.com and the BladeForums Swamp Rat Heritage sticky, I came up with the following:

(original black) Battle Rats were produced from 2002 - 2005 and priced at $148.95.

(tan) Desert Battle Rats were produced from 2003 - 2005 and priced at $158.95.

The (tan-handled) Satin Battle Rat was was a limited release in 2004 priced at $198.95.

Battle Guards were available as a semi-custom pre-order in January 2006 for $228.95

(through-hardened, black & tan) Battle Rats were sold in the Microscopic Extravaganza (Page 8 -- there had to be more than 10 of them; was that just all that was left over for the 'ganza?) for $118.95
