The ASH1 isn't my favorite Busse design, but it's still a good knife in the 6.5 inch category. It'll handle anything you throw at it, or if you decide to throw it.

If I could make a suggestion, for an extra $20, you can get the NMSFNO, which I think is a better knife for the money, you get a convex grind and 8 inch blade.

I doubt you will find a ASH-1 for around $307, maybe $350+ depending on grade and handles. The NMSFNO is a nice blade though for $327, even a Skinny Ash-1 for $302.

I don't care for the Standard ASH, but I like the feel and balance of the Skinny ASH. I may regret it, but I'm probably going to skip the NMSFNO; I've already got an abundance of knives in that class. I didn't need NMFBMs either, but couldn't resist that "Bigger, Badder, BC advertising", which is why I'm saying "probably".

I love my ASH-1. I think it's one of the most beautiful designed knives out there. The leaf shaped blade is particularly elegant while still being substantial. The steel, obviously, is first rate and I find Infi to be relatively easy to sharpen, though it took me long enough to re-profile the edge. Overall, great knife and just the right size. Anything over 7 inches becomes problematic to carry (for me at least), especially where other people are present. It holds a great edge too.

Just one more point - I prefer the CG ASH (like mine) to the skinny, because it's a full flat grind and with a convex edge bevel cuts like a demon. But this is just a personnal preference.

Here's mine:

i love mine and think it is the perfect length unless your looking for an actual chopper.

the minimum blade length for a chopper should be 7in imo but the thickness of the CG ASH-1 lets it take some good chunks out for its length.

i love thick blades and i like its blade profile.probably the most indestructible knife ever made in that size

Thanks Jeff, yes it cuts well. I think it's actually too shiny and although it works well for push cutting (like the book in the photo) it could be a little more toothy for other work like rope. Oh well, you win some, you loose some. It's the "zen" thing, once I start polishing on the strop I can't stop myself

By the way, I still love my sheath and it's so [censored] well made it will prolly outlast the knife! Thanks again. I'll still get back to you about leather pants for the Mutt, but taking the family to Vegas and the Grand Canyon next week so I need to recover for a month or so. Will send mail when I'm ready.

Cheers,
Gideon

Wow, Vegas and the Grand Canyon! Have a fun and safe trip! Look out for those one arm bandits though, they're quite numerous in Vegas.

I love the Skinny ASH. Its a great size for an all around camp knife and isn't too heavy to hike with. It will chop if you need it to but it's not the chopper the regular ASH-1 is or NMSFNO for that matter. However, if you're looking at a NMSFNO you probably would be very happy with a SOD too.

The ASH is one of my all time favorite knives. The blade length is perfect for EDC or hikes, great handle design, good looks. I prefer the thicker one but I carry the skinny more. Easier to tote around IWB so as not to raise any eyebrows in metropolitan Phoenix.

When camp is set up and wood needs to be chopped I'd prefer something like a Battle Mistress or a Dogfather. Carrying on the belt and hiking around for a day I prefer the ASH.

Highly reccomend them!

I really like my ASH1! It makes for a nice general purpose hiking/camping blade. Small enough to carry but still heavy enough to chop with. Mine is the thicker bladed model. An added plus is that it filled the void I had for a SH1
