Anyone use the ones found on the Tools For Working Wood website. Just picked up a pair. I like my strops wide, thick and long because I am a lazy stropper and am looking for as few passes as possible to get my stuff sharp. Currently using a Fehrman strop and while it works great with black and green, I was looking for something different to compare it to. How has it held up and any other suggestions on a fat piece of honing leather?

I have never used that particular strop before, but it should work very well. Generally speaking most of the best leather strops are made from horsehide rather than cowhide. Horsehide is very dense and non-porous making it much more durable than cowhide. The top of the line horsehide strops are made from what is called "shell" horsehide. The shell of the horse is the subcutaneous layer of tissue and muscle below the hide.

The strops you purchased were made from the "butt" and will be from the toughest part of the horsehide and of excellent quality leather. they should work well and last a lifetime if taken care of.

Thanks, Tolly. Good info to know. Google was not helpful in finding a distributor for shell horsehide strops. Anyone know of a good, reliable source?

I thought you were talking about a whip for stropping the horses Butt while he is alive.

And now I find out after all these years that being called a horses butt is a compliment! I'm fine leather!

"A must for the serious knife aficionado" . And you can order custom lengths, awesome. I think I need some of their horsehide belts as well. Curious as to whether the small Tek-Lok fit on their 1/4" double thick horsehide belts...
