I would place the SR101 last in line for lateral strength after both SY77 and Infi. It excels at keeping an edge but for prying I would expect it to fare the worst. That being said, I'm surprised it snapped but I know that Swamp Rat will make it right. I have beat the tarnation out of my differentially tempered Battle Rat without a single roll/ding/tear.

Eric has dealt fairly with me. I didn't have to ship from overseas, but when I broke the tip on my first Hairy Carry, he replaced the knife. I would stick with any company that deals that fairly. Besides, I like Swamp Rats a lot.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

Quick question. What happens if these CW's are no longer in stock. It's been a while since they have been offered. So what happens there?

I'm sort of hoping they just send me a NMSFNO instead . Now that would make me very happy

338, it just rolls off the tongue.

I believe they will send you a HOFSH with tiger hide marcarta.

That is really a question only Eric can answer you

Maybe a Sarsquatch. It doesn't have a point to break! Unless some nut tries to "improve" the swedge.

+1 on Eric being a stand up guy who will deal with this well...I met him at K.C. and a nicer straighter guy you could'nt meet...also in defense of SR although I only have one....a Ratmandu....this knife has really impressed me.

If it failed on me I would still give a replacement a go....I would just be careful not to be "relying" on this solely until it had earned it's spurs.

Tezza - keep the Faith Brother! Eric is a great guy and he will treat you right. Also, don't give up on the Chopweiler as it's a great knife. If I didn't think so, I would not have bought one via Blade West.

I'm really sorry to hear about your blade bro.

I also agree, it happens but it is rare with Busse/Swamprat/Scrapyard. Stansbrew had a DMCG who's tip broke from clam shucking, we were shocked (there is a thread somewhere) but no one, no company can inspect every atom of every blade all the time, but one of the big reasons why we luv the Busse folks, is the warranty.

Talk/email Eric, I've always heard nothing but great things about him, I believe he will make it right. Good luck and keep us posted!

i wouldnt write swamprat of just yet.

i push my knives pretty hard.i've had more problems with S7 than i've had with SR101.when i'm going to be doing hard chopping i use my BR instead of my DFLE even though the DFLE feels better to me in the hand and the main reason is that i find S7 to be "soft" do to the many easily dinged up and rolled edges i've gotten just doing normal wood chopping and batoning chores.its this "softness" as i call it that lets it bend all the way in half and makes it so resistant to high impact and shock.malleable is probably a better term than "soft".SR77 is much more malleable than SR101 at the risk of sounding like an internet expert.

these here are jerry's words themself.......

"Steels with high wear resistance normally score fairly low in shock resistance, lateral strength, and overall toughness. INFI scores very high in ALL of these categories."

SR101 is known for its high wear resistance.none of this is anything anyone here doesnt already know.

i have the same hunch as vic that the diff. heat treat came up into the tip there and was therefore more brittle that the rest of the blade but even then its pretty beefy there so i have to wonder if its a fluke of some sort.

while not as far in the tip came off the S6 in noss's escapade with that blade.

idk,i love swamprat, scrapyard and busse.anything can go wrong with either one and has.i give each new blade a fair and thorough beating/workout when it arrives so that any kinks can be worked out ahead of time.

didnt the tip break off a SFNO or ASH-1 about a month ago too???

I just received an email from Eric. He has been very helpful!

But for reasons I do not want to go into. I think I will just keep my CW at this stage. Lets face it, it's still a great batoner

It's funny you know, some things are just not worth mentioning. This is a prime example of that thing. Onwards & upwards

Are you ready for some "hard use" knife blasphemy? The best knife for digging in wood and prying is a cheap old bayonet or one of those 420J2 wonders. ANY knife with a fine point will either lose its point or have it bent if you put enough lateral force on a small area. I would never do much of it with any of my good knives unless it was a true emergency survival situation. Get a Crash Axe! If you are out in the bush and several days from civilization, use your knife with due care. I'm not saying you can't drill or pry at all, but try to keep lateral forces to a minimum. The last thing you want to do is break your knife miles into the Altamaha River swamps. You might need it to stick a gator.
