I think Tolly or maybe Vic mentioned the pants. Lil help guys ? Check the thread where Tolly sharpened that tram- thing looks like an LE !! Brutal . Maybe talk one of these pros into setting an edge on the trams ($$$$$) and then ya have something worth making a rig with maybe MPLE or ? and a mora and maybe a firesteel- deadly combo I would think.

If you think any combo will be more "efficient" dollar wise than a Tramontina and a Mora, you will be disappointed. The blade speed of a 14" trumps the weight of the choppers (except maybe that new NMFBM). And a good sharp Mora will out slice most any knife.

I agree horn Dog

I did fail to mention that during my test I brought out my carbon steel mora. It is pretty effective with batan work if the wood is small diameter. It can not chop very well as expected, but when it came to the wood working skills....all the big knives had to sit back and watch the champ work.

I think you owe it to us...er...I mean yourself to get that BK9 and do that test!

My guess is the Bolo Tramontina will blow the other knives away in softer wood. It may even win by a large margin in hard wood, but would guess the more massive blades might even things up a bit in the harder stuff.

I would love to see the BK9 against the DF....that would be cool. I bet some folks here have already done just that.

I know the Battle Mistress would eat the BK9 alive from the Noss tests, but don't know for sure about the DF.
I will serach for a BK9 to try to kill in this deadly contest. I think I know what will win- but we shall see -Thanks

Hey ordawg, I might know a guy in Texas who can find you that BK9, and one of the old original Camillus BK9s made from 0170-6C at that ! The new Beckers are the same in design as the old Beckers, and the 1095 CroVan steel that KaBar is using to make them is no doubt a fine steel, but I like my Beckers in 0170-6C!

I have decided to do a comparison to actually be fair to the new Beckers though, so I just ordered a new KaBar built BK9, and BK11. I'll sharpen them both the exact same way as my 0170-6C BK9 & BK11 Beckers and then I will do the same tasks with both. I will then post pictures with results. Oh, I will also include my DFLE and Swamp Warden in the test just to make it valid for posting here in the Yard !

And YES, when it comes to bang for the buck, it would be near impossible to beat a 14"Tramontina/Mora combo. Tramontinas might be very inexpensive, but they are excellent tools. The 1070 steel they use to make their machetes is in my opinion just about perfect for a machete.

Sounds great !! I was wondering if there was a differance in edge retention between the old Beckers and the new ones. Does the 1095 hold up as well as the 0170-6C ? Or is there other qualities that are different/better/ worse ? Thanks

I bet the 1095 CroVan is close to the 0170-6C. That was a "modified" 1095 anyway.

Hmmmmm. I thought 0170-6C was just a different designation for 50100-B. At least that's what Joe Talmadge says it is:

"0170-6 - 50100-B These are different designations for the same steel: 0170-6 is the steel makers classification, 50100-B is the AISI designation. A good chrome-vanadium steel that is somewhat similar to O-1, but much less expensive. The now-defunct Blackjack made several knives from O170-6, and Carbon V may be 0170-6. 50100 is basically 52100 with about 1/3 the chromium of 52100, and the B in 50100-B indicates that the steel has been modified with vanadium, making this a chrome-vanadium steel."

Source: http://www.knifeart.com/steelfaqbyjo.html

What I don't know is, if you add chromium and vanadium to 1095, do you essentially end up with 50100-B?

They both are. But 1095 with Cr and V added is not ordinary 1095. I'm saying that both 50100B (by any name) and 1095 Cro Van are enhanced 1095.
