Folks who own knives such as Busse Kin also own firearms, lights, camera equipment, etc., that add up to serious investment and expense.

I'm a single guy who has the whole house to myself so my knives are laying around in sight haphazardly all over the place. I need to organize and consider what would happen if bad guys got into my place.

Do you have extra insurance? Do you have a security system (not talking about hungry, angry, big dogs like I use)? Do you display your knives somehow or are they hidden in safes or drawers?

If you don't want to comment for security reasons I understand...

rack - I also use the "big dog" security system, as my knives are just laying around my house and basement. Of course, just about everyone out here in the country has at least a shotgun and deer rifle, so thieves KNOW it's a risky venture.

Here in Canada, all firearms have to be locked up in one form or another, and cannot be seen from an outside window. They either have to be locked in a secure safe or cabinet, or have a trigger lock and be in an area that isn't in plain sight. Handguns have way too many regs to bother describing right now. Easiest said; lock 'em up in a safe, with trigger lock, outta sight, period.

I have a very nice and very heavy safe, that is enclosed in a small cement alcove on three sides, and bolted into the back of said alcove. All my rifles, shotties, etc. are in there, with combo trigger locks as well.

My knives... some are out and around the house as EDCs and typical ones I have ready for hunting and fishing and food prepping. The others are put away (until their rotation for use comes up) in another converted gun safe, with shelving and a dehumidifier rod, to keep moisture away as much as possible.

If someone were to break into my house, they'd have to deal with the security system (Installed for when I'm on tour and away for 6 to 9 months), the dog (Border Collie, very loyal and very protective at just under 60 pounds), my everyday user knives, tonfas (Martial arts nightsticks), extending batons, cattle prod, whips, improvised defensive rope "tools"..... and of course me!

Might take a while to get a hold of one if you need to defend your castle .

a Safe is pretty much the only way to do it when it comes to safe keeping of our "collection". but it doesn't mean you can't have a few on your nightstand "just in case" (at least in this country )

So far a couple of us use the nose/claw/fang security system and a couple of us use the wires/bells/lights security system.

There are also hard safe owners, some even fortified.

Tyger...since I'm used to reasonable privacy on my own property I can't fathom living under Canadian rules. Do some have the locks and safeties and layers of security but still leave the guns and knives under the bed, out of sight, but within easy reach, loaded and cocked???

What kind of technical security systems do you who own them, use?

a buddy of mine lives in Canada and I don't think you can have a loaded handgun at home. They have to be unloaded and lock up. I believe "self-defense" with a firearm is also not legal there (correct me if I'm wrong), so that being part of "security" there is out of the question.

Are home invasions, armed robberies, and breakins only common to us in the USofA? I'm being a little facetious but [censored]!!! Guess I'd go to the bolo if I lived north of the border.

I'd breed the ugliest, meanest, biggest junk yard dogs if I lived where I couldn't defend myself.

BTW Tyger, who takes care of the border collie when you are deployed?

As of now I keep mine locked in a knife display cabinet. It is WAY too small and now I have quite a few in my nightstand as well as scattered here and there. This is only because I am way from my home. I plan on installing a very LARGE gun safe and storing my guns and knives in it. However..... in regards to the storage of the guns and knives..... I have a large handgun, knife and shotgun at arms reach of my bed. I also CCDW and the only time it is off my waist is when I am sleeping or in the shower (but it is still at arms length there too). You can't ever let your guard down as a gun that is out of reach when you need it is USELESS. Don't get me wrong.... I still know how to disable the average person with my hands but I prefer not to get that close if someone is breaking in my house.

Speaking of Canada law..... I think Obama is going to be taking a few ideas of our neighbors to the north very soon..... I am slowing my knife buying and picking up ammo and guns that are on the ban list. Get um while you can gents!!!

In Canada, it's a criminal offense to have any firearm loaded at your home (Unless your home is a firing range, and your using it for that purpose at the time! LOL!)
All weapons, rifles, shotties, handguns, etc... MUST be locked either in a safe or with a trigger lock (or both!).... no arguing that one.

Stating your have a firearm for self defense... not a good idea here in Canada. If you are in a situation where your life is endangered (and you can prove you had no choice but to do so), using a firearm in self defense is allowed. But they'll try and hammer you with improper storage or whatever.. after all, if you had the time to get the gun out of the safe/cabinet, get the ammo, load, etc..... you should've had the time to use something else, like a baseball bat. It's seriously messed up.

The border collie stays with my parents when not with me.

So, is the threat more or less than in the states? Not to be inciteful, but just how do the statistics compare with battery, burglary, assault in Canada v/s in the US? I'm curious because Canada was the sanctuary for decades for pacifists, deserters, and asylum seekers. Is it safer than down here? I appreciate your feedback.
