To be honest, it all depends on where in Canada you're referring to. In Toronto, Ontario, crime, murder, drugs, gangs... all seems to be running rampart. I don't know whether it's because of all the many different ethnic groups living there (Immigrants), whether it's the young people wanting to "imitate" the gangsta image of the modern rap stars they idolize, or what, but I honestly think it's the worst in the country!
Go to somewhere like New Brunswick or Newfoundland/Labrador, and sure there's crime, but not anywhere near the level of other areas.
There seems to be a growing trend among the Liberals of Canada that "Knives and Guns are dangerous; we must protect people from themselves and ban these horrible weapons" attitude. I do not exagerate this statement; this is almost word for word what one group of liberals said to me. When I said that I hunted, they said that hunters were basically murderers just working up the nerves to kill humans! Need I say how outraged and insulted I was at these people? I can't believe how many "Sheeple" have allowed themselves to be brainwashed by a political group that wants to turn Canada into a nanny state.
"Let's protect people by taking away all their rights!" seems to be the attitude of the Liberals, better known as the LIEberals.

Dogs would be great but I am either away or out of the house too much....
Over here you can rig your alarm to a direct Police response line...I was in South Africa and my Alarm went off...I have a neighbour as a key holder...because of my house being flagged as "firearms" my neighbour said I had two teams of armed respose cops come to the house...and (amazingly) they had a helicopter overhead...the cause...a hugh great spider crossing a sensor...the cost...£500 for a false alarm call...that's $750 to $1000 depending on the exchange rate...
We pay a lot for our "firearms priviledges" over here...
Burglars though know where to find knives in a Kitchen...your kidding yourself if you think hiding your "heavy" knives makes any difference...except on the insurance claim perhaps...best to make your own mind up whether to be judged by 12 or carried by 6 if a Burglar gets in whilst you're there...when I am away it takes me a day or so to get the house ready incase the Police have to come in...re-loading room mainly...a single round not locked away and your license will be revoked...
I have a number of security firearms cabinets...one at least in my bedroom... and sleep with the bedroom door locked...any alarm goes off and I would not be checking the house out with just a torch...
If I am away...things are locked away and unlikely to be stolen...even if they did get one cabinet...the useable aspect is denied because bolts are in others...the main hassle is the [censored] alarm...it is an expensive call out bill!

So, SteelFan, you reside in the UK? I live out in the country so a monitored system would take too long for the law to arrive. The unmonitored kind with the sirens and blinking lights probably wouldn't work for me either because the neighbors aren't that close.
I'm thinking about bumping up my homeowner's insurance to cover some stuff...

It's strange how we do things differently because of the law. Over here Nothing needs to be lock up or unloaded unless you have kids. Your house is your castle after all.
It is also not uncommon to have firearms hidden in different places around the house ready to go. Alarm, dogs they are very good first line of defense but if they managed to get into your house chances are those are not enough. There are a lot more home invasion around here due to the holiday. Lost of jobs do not help either. And gun sells are up almost 10%.
In states where they have "castle doctrine" home owners do not even have to "find out" if their life is in danger or not before they stop the threat. I believe your life is already in danger if someone breaks into your place...

Yes I am in the UK...in the "Countryside" as well...up in the hills in the Peak District...my nearest neighbour is a farm but not to far away...unless you are in the wilds of Scotland you are never that far from the Police in our Country.
They usually take 30 mins to get to my house...I have had two attempts of car theives trying to steal my car...probably to order...back then I had an old DB7...and mistakenly left it on the drive overnight...the security infared spotlights came on...then I had my head out the window shouting at them...they ran off and jumped into a waiting car...I went down to put it in the garage only to find the battery was flat from the alarm...that was a problem with those cars.
I had my Landrover back up and was jump starting the car when the theives came back round the bend in the road...I could'nt believe their audacity...they slowed to stop...probably going to threaten me for the keys...I sorted it out...and they drove off...never came back and I sold the car...too much hassle even parking it. The Police showed up 15 mins afterwards...all told about 30 mins from my ringing them...
Those infrared sensors on spotlights are a real good deterrant....so is a Benelli shotgun...

All of my knives and firearms are locked up in safes, except the user DMDC and my CCW, a glock 17. BTW, I live in an apartment (can't find the right plot of land to build my house), but even when I do get a house, I'll likely build a vault in addition to the safes.

My knives are not really organized as they should be. I know where the ones I use are though. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4069761537893819675&pr=goog-slYou can now carry in Texas, this is an old video. But I couldn't live in a place with laws like that.
