Does anybody have any experience with tent-tipi's?
I snagged a couple of pictures off the internet (with apologies to the
people who posted them)

Looks pretty cozy for sure. I am betting some of the folks here have used them. I just use a conventional 4 man for myself- wife and the yellow dawg. Picture would be even better with a pair of DFs in the frame outside. Or- a few SODs would be even better !! Great topic !!

I don't have any I am getting a Nemo Morpho soon and am very exited about it. I know helsport makes tipi tents and their goods are very high quality.

This is the morpho it does not have any poles. It has really strong airtubes instead, I am almost as exited for this tent as I am for my SY. It also has like a 45 second setup and has amazing reviews.

That's really cool looking. How do the air tubes work? Do you have to inflate
them or do they self inflate?

Cheers

Kifaru makes the very best tipi style tents. A bit pricey, though. - http://www.kifaru.net/TIPI.HTM

For my camping purposes, though, I've long since abandoned tents in favor of year-round hammocking. - http://www.hammockforums.net

Yes it comes with a little foot pump, you can inflate both of them in about 45 seconds. They are a lot stronger and more reliable then the metal kind.

Scraphound,

Thanks for the link to the hammock forum. I didn't even know one existed.
Gonna make an account and get on there to check it out.
I like the idea of a hammock, but for now am stuck with tenting when out
and about.
The wife and I did get a tent trailer from our eldest this year, but that's
only getting used for the standard car camping routine.
I've got a small 2 man dome tent that I've been using otherwise but am looking
for something different.

Cheers

I think that the Tent Tipi is meant to be used more in a base camp setup.
Can't really think of lugging in a stove (like in the second picture) on
a backpacking trip, although I could see a small wood fire set in the middle
of the tipi with the smoke going out the top.
I like the amount of head room that you have inside the tipi as opposed
to a tent and think it would be worthwhile in that sense.

Anyway, just my $0.02 on the subject

Cheers

Years ago some guy advocated using a surplus parachute as a tipi. His first step was to lay the parachute out flat and doubled, so that you had two half-circles folded together. He claimed that two layers of fabric next to each other acted like a tent and a fly, to prevent condensation. Then he staked the bottom of the chute in a circle, and lifted the peak with a rope thrown over a tree branch. I never tried his system, but who knows? It might have worked.

That's not a bad idea.
Now, I just need to find a surplus parachute <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Seriously though, that's a pretty good idea!

mcjhrobinson,

I'm not too hot on the hammocks, but have to say that Six Moon and Gossamer Gear
look like they are excellent sites. Thanks for putting them up <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />
