That is soooo coooool!
I have to make myself one of those.
Don't see any chipping, so what did you use to sharpen it?

Cheers

Instead of knapping like flint/obsidian, with slate you grind. I just picked up a new grindstone and this was its first project actually. And when I say "pick up", I mean exactly that, it was a likely-looking rock I saw while walking around. Pretty too, lots of mica in it. Once you grind the major shape out, you do the final sharpening and polishing with another piece of slate. I'm a little dissatisfied with how sharp the edge (doesn't) get doing this, I think there must be a trick to getting a better edge. Thinking bone maybe since it's fairly hard but fine grained.

I'd be afraid to try, but I doubt it. These things are so fragile.

I was thinking that I might find some and take a flat file to it
Didn't realize that you did the grinding with grind stone. Verry Cool

Nice one Momaw...let us know how you get on...is there any flint in your neck of the Woods? Ray Mears is into this type of thing and said flint from the South Downs here in England had been found crafted as knives as far away as Scotland...so those who have an abundance of Slate such as Scotland...must have valued flint for the extra edge you could get....

That is one Lean Mean Carrot Cutting Machine!

Very Nice!

That would look nice in a cool primitive looking rawhide sheath.

I bought some flint knapping videos a while back, thinking it would be interesting to learn more about. I watched them and understand the basic techniques, but to get good at it, I'd need to devote a lot more time and effort to it than I'm willing to. There's basically a whole little sub-culture of people who devote themselves to primitive skills that most people don't know exists -- they have meets all over the US.

I tried flint knapping in a Archaeology course that I took in University.
It's not as easy as you would think.
Ran into a fellow at the Eugene Oregon knife show that does knapping. His
work was really cool, and the knives looked great. If I could have afforded
one, I surely would have brought it home. His knives were Obsidian.

Cheers
