I agree that micarta isn't a cheapo material, Dave. The person you mentioned just doesn't care much for using it to construct knife handles. On the other hand, said individual has numerous other redeeming qualities that endear him to those of us who have been around here awhile. So we forgive him his little idiosyncracy in this area.
Actually, I like micarta. I just don't like it in the handle of a knife that's designed to absorb a lot of shock. First paragraph, thanks mate! Second paragraph, second sentence, a big plus 1!

All three companies produce the BEST knives in the world. Busse is considered the King of the Hill for various reasons.

I forget that these are primarily shock knives used for a lot of chopping etc. I agree that a full tang knife that was designed to chop is like having an exposed backstrap on my S&W 500. Not very easy on the hands. I will say this, on my big bore kickers I like smoother grips that move rather than the sticky rubber tearing at my skin.

Someone mentioned Micarta as a "Cheapo" material?
Hmm think that might have been me! ;)
My vitriolic view on micarta is widely known in these parts! (This lot just nod sagely when I rant then quietly ignore the rant! :D ) The point I was trying to make- albeit badly, was that the Busse handles look cheap and nasty to me- look at a BC and a Bark River handle. No contest on visual quality- metallurgy is a different matter, INFI is good stuff (though Mike's A2 is supposed to be good too)... Busse handles are roughly CNC cut and can be fuzzy and just look cheapo. Micarta has it's uses, I'm waiting on a G10 handled ss Bravo 1 from BRKT, on choppers res-C is so much nicer though. HornDog our resident chopper expert has said several times the DFLE is the best chopper going. (Vic chime in if I'm misusing/ misrepresenting your words!)
I have considered getting a 7" BC of some sort with black G10 scales then wrapping them in electrician tape etc to make the knife more useful, then Sterling collapsed which stuffed that plan! :)
I have never even held any of these knives but that will change real soon. from what I have read and seen the Busse is the top in the pecking order and the SY is the third, of course that has already been pointed out. For my personal tastes, I have always like the more plain styles with usage in mind. the SY handles look to be better for me, nothing against micarta it is not my thing (I have even tried it on 1911 pistols and did not like it). Also, the Busse designs seem to be to busy for me, but that is not saying that I will not own one someday. And lastly, for me SY appeals to me as the working mans blade. JMHO

Sumoj275a, every knife fan should own a Busse Combat so they can really get INFI- but of course also so they can appreciate Jerry's finest work... RES-C!!
If you want to kill two birds with one stone I'd recommend the Busse Combat Basic 7! That will even keep up with a S6...

[
Res-C should be offered on choppers and camp knives produced by all three Bussekin companies instead of being "relegated" only to Scrap Yard.
Now that is agood idea.

Handle material is an interesting one, I have the Swamp Ratmandu with Micarta and G10. I prefer the smoother feel of G10. Then you compare it against a Mutt with ResC and from a usability point of view the Mutt wins.
And considering that the Ratmandu handle is a very good one, with the HRLM probably the best handle form from the Swamp.

If you want to kill two birds with one stone I'd recommend the Busse Combat Basic 7! That will even keep up with a S6... Except, of course, that Basic 7's are extremely rare and they're manufactured of Modified INFI, not INFI. There are those who would argue that, because of the way Busse Combat builds its knives, an INFI knife achieves its maximum advantage over a rather short range of blade lengths . . . typically four to six inches. Above six inches, BC uses the wrong kind of handle materials and below 4", less expensive alloys than INFI exist that are more than adequate for a knife that size. I generally subscribe to that point of view. So I, for example, would buy neither a Fusion Battle Mistress (wrong handle) nor a Game Warden (alloy overkill). The only Busse knife I currently own is a Straight-Handled Satin Jack. And of the recent Busse offerings, my favorite by far is the Skinny ASH-1. Both feature 6" blades constructed of 3/16" thick INFI (perfect). PS: For those who may be interested, Skinny ASH-1s are still available in the Busse Company Store. Get 'em while you can. Spooky.. My only Busse Combat with cheapo looking(!) micarta is my BATAC CG using exactly that reasoning too!!!
