I always encounter the term of "normal use" from knife makers and people using knives. I heared a lot of things like "indestructible in normal use". But what usually means that "normal use"? And is it something general, or for each knife manufacturer "normal use" may have different meanning? Does normal use in general mean cutting in food or other soft materials only? Does it include chopping in wood or things like that? And what does "abuse" mean?
I personally thing abuse means to force the knife over its limits. But how do I know which are its limits? Does it mean abuse if I use the knife for anything other than cutting?
I'm not refering to Scrap Yard knives only, but also to knives in general... So my generic question can be splitted in two different questions: What do you understand by "normal use"? and What people usually understand by "normal use"?

There are no limits with scrapyard knifes. I think normal use is just day to day stuff like preparing food and opening boxes, maby a little whittling here and there.
If you are a friend of the yard, you are a friend of mine.

"Normal use" will vary with each knife and even each material. As such, normal use should typically be taken in context of a specific blade or series of blades. Scrapyard knives as a general rule are quarter-inch thick, fixed handle, hidden tang designs made from modified S7 impact steel. We can make generalizations about all such knives: that they will readily handle high impact (allowing aggressive chopping and batoning) and a high degree of lateral stress when used as a pry bar. Whereas, say, a Swiss Army Knife, made of very thin and hard stainless, should only used as a splitting tool or prybar under circumstances of extreme desperation. "Normal use" is the sum of uses toward which the knife maker gave some consideration, and for a Scrapyard knife (because they are so over-built) includes virtually everything except chopping concrete or hardened steel: no knives are made for these purposes because cutting such hard materials is not practical (hence impact or abrasion tools).....

A very well thought out reply! If it's a s.h.t.f knife it needs to be Busse-kin or a badger dodger (BRKT)!

Normal use on the one side ( manuafacture) is whatever they will stand behind. Which in SY terms is pretty much anything. On the other hand- what the consumer expects can sometimes border on " ridiculous" . This is also how a manufacture builds his name and his product line. In Bussekin- this is also what makes their demand so extreme. In other words- it is a terific VALUE. As for other blades- I simply don't know at this point as I am only buying Bussekin. Thanks

For most knives, "normal use" means slicing things. Some companies might exclude high impact chopping, and I've read posts where batoning was classified as abuse. Others say batoning is OK so long as you're not beating the spine with a steel hammer. Most companies would classify prying or torquing (trying to use your knife as a screwdriver) as abuse. If a company is satisfied that they've got your money and unconcerned about return business or word-of-mouth, then just about any damage will be called the result of abuse. However, I've seen pictures of Bussekin knives used to shatter ceramic toilets and being thrust through refrigerator doors. They stand behind their products, so no worries here. A very well thought out reply! If it's a s.h.t.f knife it needs to be Busse-kin or a badger dodger (BRKT)! I've got a pair of BRKT Forresters and a pair of Claxs -- those are some solid heavy choppers, similar to a WWII Smatchet.
