Hey dawgs- what kind of vehicles-SUVs- etc to you guys use ? I live in a pretty remote place so I have a Toyota FJ and I also have CanAm 4 wheel drive quads. I had my eye on a new Hummer but haven't added it yet. All of my stuff is fully loaded for off road and survival type situations. So......what kind of vehicles and what do you carry for emergency situation relating to vehicle and travel. Should be interesting-Thank You

I have a Volvo for around town and long trips and a Honda Ridgeline for everything else. I carry a BOB in the back and depending if I am going on Ft Knox or not there is always a handgun and battle rifle with more than enough ammo(except on post...they don't like that too much). I also have a fully loaded first aid bag to take care of pretty much any emergency that I come across.

For a vehicle, I've got an old (1995) Suzuki Sidekick 4X4. It goes
just about anywhere.

For kit, I've got a CADPAT RECON 3 day Rucksak.

In it I carry my BK9, soon to be switched out by my SOD or CT (when
it gets here), my Koster Bushcraft, a Brunton multifuel stove, extra
clothing (snowmobile suit in winter), 100ft of paracord, water treatment
kit, first aid med kit, fishing kit, emergency rations, stainless steel
1-litre water bottle, 10' by 10' tarp, a six pack of emergency road flares
and a firestarting kit.

The pack has an internal frame, which makes it a bit heavier, and I
could pack it far lighter than I do (it's about 30 - 40 lb now), but
it's in the vehicle as an emergency pack, so it can be a bit heavier.

Cheers

08' F350 4by My tool box in the bed has some MRE's water rope, tarp, extra boots, coats, and tools, behind the seat with a cable lock to the frame I have a AK47 with a folder and a few mags of ammo, plus I never leave without a pistol.
And did I mention that there are always a few of the yard knives!
My wife has a great USV a Nissan Xtera, I will tell you it is THE best 4wd on the road today period. in 2 ft. of snow it is like driving on dry ground just amazing, it is fully loaded with lots of gear in the storage compartment in the rear too.

I've got a Suzuki Sidekick 1996 that is like that. Not one of these new
beasts that are so expensive. Around here, you need to have something
good that will take you into the lakes. My Sidekick does that and more.

No lift kit needed though...

2WD 1990 Datsun P/U. with come-a-long, pile of pulleys an rope and anchor straps, shovel, pick, and axe, survival kit, 100 liters spare fuel. Goes anywhere. Have winched it by hand (20:1 Z rig pulley system, thru a 40' wide river. Pulled it uphill (pulleys. Flipped it over (upright).

Well, ignoring Bushy's remark I drive an 01' Dodge 4X4 - just turned 60K miles on it. I keep a tool kit, emergency bag which covers most survival needs (including TP and hand sanitizer), jacket and hat, extra mags and ammo for my .40 S&W, SOD, and some spare change.

For offroad play and hauling the canoe I have an 89 Ford Bronco that I bought new. The cool thing about it is it has 300CI straight six and a 5speed overdrive. Gets 17 miles per gallon.

2000 Powerstroke F350 crew cab 4x4 Lariet. Automatic or manuak locking hubs, 295 75 r16s.

4inch exhaust, chipped, cool air intake, tool box, and bumper replacements front and rear. Its a Texas thing.

The suspension is starting to get saggy so I'm considering a lift kit. Heck, they come with all the bushings, shocks, springs all the way around, pitman arm, sway bar links etc. It ends up being way cheaper than going with factory parts and is better quality no doubt.

05 Nissan Xterra, will agree with the earlier post, best offroad vehicle on the market. Proven in some pretty harsh Michigan winters.

2 wheel drive is to get stuck, 4 wheel drive is to get out!

And Bushman, some of the hills I have clawed up would been absolutely impossible in 2wd. Ended up having to crawl almost sideways up the hill. No hitch point to winch from and the ground was what appeared to be old river rocks from .5 to 3" in diameter. You could barely stand on the stuff.

I've been to Alaska but not for as long as I would have liked.

Toyotas are excellent trucks, we ha ve had two older ones on the ranch. Super tough.

That is really sweet you were able to drive to Alaska. One day I want to do that.

Haha! I drive both daily. A little '06 Hyundai Tiburon. Trucks are not as fun in parking lot traffic. Southern California.

I have driven all kinds of trucks at work, from f-150's to f-750's. Chevy and Dodge as well. 4x and 2x. We have super fine sand dunes out here so getting stuck is just a matter of time. I do love pushing my limits in the 2x

I recently got a route where I have to drive through a lake at a country club. It has a sweet golf course and many pools. The look on people's faces is priceless!

I drove hood deep in a 2x Chevy 1500. 6 cyl. I swore I wasn't going to make it out but it took it like a champ.

My Hyundai I've taken to Vancouver. I love that car. I was paying $24 per tank, which is about 350 miles. I've also had a '95 Mitsu galant(great 2.4 4-banger), a '99 Chevy blazer (rolled it off an embankment(black ice) drop of 40' and by the grace of God survived without the need of even a bandage),and an '05 Chrysler 300- the ladies loved it but I felt like an old man in it.

Wow Trumby! How much do the pelts bring down there?

Wow Trumby! How much do the pelts bring down there?

These days they are averaging around $16.00 with top quality going up to $25.00.

Back when I was shooting professional, late 70's I was averaging $28.50 with top quality going up to $45.00.

The animal liberationists brought the market down to it's knees. They of course have no idea the damage they reek on Lambing and native bird life. (They don't only eat Rabbits. )

The fella in the pictures was skinning in under a minute. I was never that good.

Calibers are still the same with .17cal Remington being the preferred cal. I was using a Sako .17 and a backup rifle in .22mag for close up shooting.

Skinning isn't that straight forward as you need the head and tail skinned and pegged out to buyers requirements.

It used to take me around 2 minutes to skin a Fox and about 10 minutes to peg one out. I later bought a staple gun and was able to peg out much faster.

My last sale before quitting was 540 skins at an average of $28.50. I was managing a cattle station at the time so had the luxury of staying home on the nights in high winds when the .17's were ineffective on shots out to 300 meters.
Cheers, Ian.

2007 Chevy Silverado 4x4 crew cab. I've had 2 jeeps: 73 CJ5 and a 86 CJ7. I will have another Jeep. If Jeep comes out with the new Gladiator that will be the ticket.

My truck greats great mileage compared to my old half ton gasser. For a 3/4 ton diesel that gets 19 mpg on the highway I have no complaints. If I have to take a long trip and don't need to haul or tow anything we take the wifes car which gets incredible mileage.

My giggle machine! Dodge Ram 1500, 238K on the frame, god only knows on the engine. The gentleman I bought it from flipped the vehicle and dropped in an engine from a wrecked 5.2, so unfortunately for the moment it was downsized. Eventually though, I'd like to get a new crate 5.9L engine and new tranny for it, set it up for success

The Patriot has been sold, I wanted to get out from underneath the payments on it, save a little money. It was a 2WD anyways, I got tired of being pulled out and ribbed for having a 2WD by my friends. In CO, you pretty much need a 4WD unless you never venture outside of city limits

Congrats on the new Cat Coyote, great choice! I love mine, it has been very good to me, and i beat the tar out of it. Picked up the plow setup for it and have been very pleased with how well it pushes the heavy wet stuff,my lower back is pleased as well:)
Your gonna love it, and from what i have heard and read the H1 has really come a long way the last few years, and i love the look of the Mud Pro! I have been tempted to trade up but the 5 has been bulletproof so far and i just finished paying it off.
Anyway, i would love to see some pics, and in case you didnt know, ArcticChat.com has lots of good people and tech info.
Congrats again and have fun. Regards, Mike

Thanks S H, she's almost ready for her 4th paint job in the 23 years that ive owned her since i was 21, just trying to find the time to finish up the rear quarters i put on her thats why its in primer, they just came out with front fenders finally too, but they are 500 each and i keep spending my fender money on my OTHER steel addiction;)
Anyway, she sports a bored out 428 with Muncie M21 4 speed with 3.73 gears out back, disc brakes, boxed control arms, over sized sway bars front and rear, and Trans Am steering box with a few other goodies here and there.
The zombies dont stand a chance. Thanks man. Regards, Mike

I will check out the arcticchat, from what I understand the 2011 H1 mud pro went to a better axle than my 2010 and went to the standard 3 to 1 gear ratio instead of the 4 to 1 that mine has.
I've only used mine for a few days hunting, just been too busy to ride since I got it.
My one brother has a 2009 H1 700 and my other brother has a 2008 or 2009 (can't remember) 700 grizzly.
Only reason I did the 700 was when I looked at the upgrades (winch, larger tires etc) it was the best deal.
I figured I would only be buying one and I wouldn't have spare cash for a while on accessories.

Ha ha! The car looks better then it is. Subsurface rust etc is eating her up from the in side (She was painted a few years ago, but not a real good job by the people). I was in Cape Town for a year and a half and the rust really came down hard on her. Third engin, in this one, I broke 2, original had more then 400000km on it. Was my fathers, then my sisters and now mine.

SH,

I still have the Tundra and the Blazer. Yeah, we were close to selling it, but things turned around at the last minute. That's part of the reason I've been absent lately. I've been working hard and playing hard with my sons. I try and go into "airplane mode" as soon as I get home until the boys go to sleep. So, I don't stop by the Yard as much to post.

No, its not a 442, but GTO IS The Original Muscle Car
And the only car to win Motor Trend car of the year 5 years in a row(from 64 to 69) Although Olds always gave Poncho the best competition.
And dont forget who the winningest manufacturer in racing was until GM banned racing in 1962 when Pontiac was projected to out-sell chevy as number one, which would have forced chevy to branch out of GM and become independant under government guidelines. Corperate BULL.
Anyway, i guess they got the best of both of us since Pontiac and Olds are both gone
Im guessing you had a 442 Skunk? Would love to see some pics if you have em

Nope, never had one, buy OH MAN! A kid here in town had one and it was one sharp ride. We also had 2 or 3 goats, a couple 57 cheby's and a 55, one of the 57's had a souped up 289 and on Sunday afternoons he would bounce down mainstreet popping wheelies! We had 2 chargers and 3 roadrunners and some others. AND THIS all from a town with only MAYBE 1000 people in it!
Now they weren't ALL FROM town, but it was their home base.

Haha, I drove a '53 GMC pickup with a 6.

**Now mind you this was back in late 60's are REAL early 70's (I left in 74)

I love that stuff. My buddy has a 55 chevy, we always joke about a re-enactment of the movie "Two Lane Blacktop" from 70. Did you ever see that one back in the day?

Hey ZX Y'all could use a bumper like that on your trucks over there couldn't you? That thing should survive a hit with one of your critters.

After hitting a couple of whitetails and seeing the damage it could do, I went for something that might actually take a hit with minimal damage.

Hopefully it's insurance I wont use. I still have to get the winch for it. But that might entail slowing down on my knife habit.

Our "daily driver" is a 2005 Ford Escape Sport 4x4 with about 80k on it. We bought it new in 2005 because my "round trip" to work is about 38 miles. The 3.0L is too weak for my liking, but its been an uber reliable AWD vehicle.

My truck is a 2005 Nissan Titan Crew Cab SE with a 305hp 5.6L V8. With the "big tow" package it averages around 12mpg so it mostly sits in the driveway. I inherited this from my father, and it has around 79k miles.

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.9 Magnum. Bought used in 2010.

I had NO IDEA it was a "Jeep Cult Classic" at the time.

It was the fastest 4x4 made to date when released. Eclipsed by Jeeps Hemi Jeep a few years back.

ONLY 15,024 were ever made. Only 10,051 without CA. emissions.
Wikipedia says this.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeep_Grand_Cherokee

EVERY option made in 1998 was standard on these. ONLY option was Tow Pkg., this has it too.
Came in White,Black and Silver ONLY!!

I have ALWAYS loved speed. NO RUST,One Owner and 55 year old woman!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpO7rKZt8kc

It has a new Magnaflow Exhaust, Cold Air intake, trans chip-set and still needs the Hi-Po chip but it can still do 0-60 in 6 seconds!!

Not too shabby for a 14 year old Jeep at 4,500 pounds.

This link I shudder to put up. I was so happy after the exhaust and cold air I made this one.

It's a bit too long for my tastes but I'll give a dollar to anyone who can identify the song that comes in the last few seconds. Starts at 5:07 mark.

I almost said $5.00 but I am unable to work these days and a dollar to me is like at least a fiver to anyone else.

Peace.

Nice Ride PoP. What is that song?

My Nissan has 305hp / 379ftlb of torque, and is fast for a truck, but it wouldn't hold a candle to the 2005 Mustang GT I bought in 2004 (sold it after I bent an axle / sheared off one wheel in an accident) The Titan (from a dead stop) will smoke both 10.5" wide rear tires until the electronic limited slip differential locks and then it "brakes" one of them. I found this out after misjudging on coming traffic....the truck almost started wheel hopping when I floored it

My old Mustang in front of a building I designed...

Here is my 4x4.

Sorry about the sound. My camera's mic can't handle the bass. I barely had it turned up too.

Yes, those are real TOW Missile tubes turned into bass tubes. And, yes, I also have teddy bears.

Arch, I dig the Ford as well. I used to drive a 1994 convertable 5.0 my last year of high school. I miss that ride.

Skunk, that is the one that gets hauled in the Peterbuilt. It doesn't take to 75 mph highway speeds ... err ... at all.

From what you said I though that was the one. I know I would be glad to get a piece of junk like that hauled around so I wouldn't have to drive it!

I guess the people at the Humvee factory forgot to put highway gears in the thing. They just don't understand the need to do 80 in a warzone I guess.

The Blue one is nice (and mostly free what's better ) but I actually prefer getting around in the Landcruiser.

Hehe, Yeah the blue one looks like it would need long flat roads with easy sweeping curves (just so you can maintain 200kph speed)! It would be fun at times but the LC would be more relaxing, nature has a way of doing that.

Yes....maintaining possession of my drivers licence is MUCH harder in the blue car.. I have a 124km (round trip)commute to work each day and most of it is on freeway running against the flow of traffic...lets just say I have to be diligent about setting the cruise control to a legally acceptable speed...

I have traveled to so many places in the Landcruiser it is a bit nostalgic each time I head out in it...

I do now have to drive down to the Post office just now to collect a Regulator that has apparently arrived...

Fewer choices out here mate. Holden, though a subsidiary of GM, is fully self sufficient and survived the great implosion as an entity on it's own without needing to be bailed out. It was still profitable with it's operations out here unlike most all of the rest of the company.

No, its not a 442, but GTO IS The Original Muscle Car
And the only car to win Motor Trend car of the year 5 years in a row(from 64 to 69)

You're wrong about that my friend. In 1967 the Motor Trend car of the year was the Mercury Cougar. I owned one in the GT 390 XR7 mode.

No matter where you go.....There you are.

Hi,
Aberdeen, Angels from Willow Tree and a couple of very large shipments to Cornelius Furs in Sydney.

Where were you buying from ?

Ian.

Edited to add.

Back in the late eighty's I was back in the Queensland Gulf working and managing cattle stations.
Most of my skins were sold in the late seventy's, good times then, they were averaging around the thirty dollars.

The inline 5 cylinder has more power than the 4.3 v6 in my old S10 & gets better gas mileage.
