Howdy dogs. Well i got my first scrapyard in the form of a tan SOD and I love this thing. I immediately took it out and chopped and battoned some firewood with it. I went home to NYC for the holdiays and brought it along to show my friends. While I was there I used it some more and built three or four campfires with it and my gerber strikforce. Anyway I go into mastersmiths, which is a custom knife store in the city. I arranged for them to make a sheath for me, they do and it sucks. I dont know how but the res-c handle has chipped and flaked where the knife is inserted to the kydex...I think the sheath maker must have really really hammered it in there after making it too tight...Like I said I had already put some good use on the blade but it was shaving sharp...when I got this sheath and saw the damage to the handle I was speechless..I dont view my knives as jewlery and dont mind signs of honest use but this is just a sign of carelessness and a reminder that my brand new knife is already dis-honestly blemished...I am suprised the res-c has chipped this way..Eating up thick knotty seasoned wood no problem...plastic sheath mars my handle...really disapointed in this sheath expereince...just had to rant to my fellow dogs who I imagine understand my frustrations..I will try and post some picstures of the damage...
Cheers
Patrick

Got any pics to show the damage?

Definitely not cool on the part of the maker. Just my guess - It sounds like they did not protect the handle and pushed it in and out while the unfinished work in progress kydex was tight and had sharp unfinished edges.

Others probably have more experience and can comment more but I suspect that while res-c is hard, I am not surprised that a sharp kydex edge would cut it, particularly if forced.

If you're unhappy with the sheath why not have Rainwalker make you one. He is a regular on this board and his work is top notch.

Neal

FYI, Scrap Yard's warranty covers the res-c too...

I too am sorry to hear about your bad sheath experience. Kydex will bite and gouge Res-C if the edges are smoothed out or shaped well. Over time any sheath will cause some slight rubbing or wear but it should be fairly minimal.

I'm interested in seeing the pics of the knife and the sheath.

Bummer on the damage caused by careless people. Why not send it in and get it repaired and have Jeff make you some decent pants. Can you get your money back from the careless merchant ? I can guarantee this won't happen with Jeff. Hope you get it right- will be interesting to see pictures

If the res-c is still attached, just torn, you can gently heat it with a lighter, and mold it back into shape if you wish. I had to do that with my Battle Rat once. I was swinging at some brush on the fence row, and a small sharp branch gouged a hole in it. I fixed it with a lighter.

Another time, I was sitting in one of those green plastic yard chairs with my BR in my duct tape sheath. I had been working on clearing brush, and had set down to rest. When I got up to get back to work, I noticed an indented line on the handle of my BR. I was puzzled at first, until I sat back down and noticed it lined up exactly with the edge of the chair where I was sitting. The sharp plastic corner had pressed against it, and it was hard enough it deformed the res-c and stayed that way. It doesn’t bother me though. Here’s a pic of what it looked like:

thanks for the replies guys...I will get some pictures taken tomorrow...I dont have photbucket so I might need help posting them...I am certainly not putting the res c handle down I am just really bummed about the crappy sheath and the resulting damage caused by this maker..I am pretty sure the blade is draggin on kydex in and out every time i use the sheath beacuse it has a noticable effect on the edge of the knife if I shapren it super fine and also comes out with kydex chips on the edge.
