Sigh, I just looked around the room and I can SEE 43 knives just laying around or on the walls. I really need to stop buying them or I'll run out of space. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

Sounds like a wonderful problem to have! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

[ordawg1] Are the wraps on your handles useful or just decorative?
[FuGaWee] Maybe he has big hands and the standard handles are just too small.
[ordawg1] Why isn't it on all of them? On a knife like a old DM with the really cool old grips and BIG THICK blade...
[DotD] Also, works great if you have big paws.
[ordawg1] Just on "some"?
[DotD] We'll just have to wait until mhr lets us know

The wraps are useful because I prefer larger grips for my big hands. ESPECIALLY on the older Dumpster Mutts with the small Busse Basic handles (DMCG & DMLE). Those handles are REALLY small! The moku hitching on the DFLE works pretty well, but the ringbolt hitching on the DMLE and the YKCG is perfect. It serves to add thickness in excess of fatness, if that makes any sense. The SAR5 has really fat grips, so doesn't need any added. The mudder grips are perfect the way they are. The RMD is also perfect. The smaller knives with micarta (HCLE, HCSE) are fine with smaller handles because finger control is all you really want on them. At some point I will likely wrap the SODs and the DFCG. I'm holding off on the SODLE until the JYD with that number lets me know if he wants it. In any case (as you see on the DFCG), you definitely want a wrist lanyard on any chopper for safety purposes.

Mhr,
You've got big hands and I have small hands. The handle of the SOD is just
about perfect, and the handle on my RMD is just right!
It's cool how you did the smaller knives like that.
I'm going to have to learn to do that someday.

Thanks.

After I saw this I had to try it. I went with the ringbolt stitching and it not only looks good but feels good as well. Thanks MHR, here's how it turned out:

Looks great! I think you used a different method (even for a two-strand ringbolt). I have a two-strand on my DMLE, constructed by tying a constrictor knot as far forward on the grip as possible. Leave 'loooong' tag ends, then alternate half hitches in opposite directions to the end of the handle. Keep the hitches as straight as possible down the belly of the grip. Pass the tag ends through the lanyard hole in opposite directions when you get to that point, and finish as you like. The three strand as on my YKCG is more complicated, but close-up pictures may help show the detail...

Interestingly, the way the knot begins on the grip creates a functional finger stop when choking up on the blade. Since the YK choil isn't big enough for an index finger (without modification), I find this wrap configuration on this knife to be 100% to my liking. In fact, every hike/camp/backcountry trip I took this past summer ended up with this knife along for the ride. When decision time came (that is, "which fixed blade will be worth the weight?"), this was the answer every time.
