First, I have to say how much I was impressed at how sharp the SOD was out of the mail. Easily shaved hair and cut paper with a slight draw. However, I'm a bit of a convex man at heart. Even though I've only had the SOD since Friday, the sandpaper mouse pad was calling to me and I relinquished to the beckon.
Okay, so my goal was not to muck with the actual edge so much because I was happy with that. Rather what I really wanted to do was knock the shoulders down at the bevel and smoothen the coating where it meets the blade. Also I wanted to polish the bear blade enough to remove the small verticle grind lines evident on the edge.
I put about 1 h time as this was all done by hand. Started with 220 grit 3M wet dry paper (1/3 sheets) tacked onto the old school soft blue mouse pad onto a 2x4 backing. I ran approximately 200 strops per side. The 220 grit took the longest as this is where all the work came in. I then progressed to 400, 600, 800, 1000, 2000 then moved to a leather strop loaded with green compound and finally plain leather stropping.
Here is the final results:
The edge is as sharp, if not a tad sharper then it used to be. My hope is that it will really excel on wood cutting and chopping tasks as I've elimnated some of the friction.
Beta was happy too! Just look at the smile on her face <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
