The ASH looked great so I bought one and it was too heavy for me. So to BF it went, wish I would have bought a Skinny ASH. I'd check BF first, many people are hurting for money and you can find used and even new Skinny ASHs for less than the Co. store.

The Skinny ASH1 is a great knife. I know it's $300, but it is one of the best handling medium/large knives I know of. And it is INFI. No regrets here. I convexed mine, but I do that. It is just fine as it is.

Haha,
Speaking of skinny ash1,
I just got one today off the secondary market (BF) for a great price.
Jungle green blade with black handles.
I will post pictures of it next to a SOD when I get it.
Here is a picture dobywon posted of it,
[Linked Image from i472.photobucket.com]

Ive been wanting one for a long time...
Always checking the website to see if they were still available.
Well, when this guy offered it for sale,I just grabbed it.
That Destruction test really pushed me over the top.

Vic beat me while I was uploading pics and stepped away from my computer for a bit, but since I started:

The Skinny Ash is a great knife IMO. For the record, the Skinny ASH has a full height convex primary grind. But, with a convexed secondary grind edge. (Same as SJTAC, SARSquatch, SAR5,....) (* Vic's is a "True" Full convex with no secondary grind! which I like best and have done to my SJTAC and some others. )

I would "sort" of agree with Bruce that the Camp Tramp and Skinny Ash are not entirely an apples to apples comparison. But, I wouldn't say they are WAY different. They have some very fair comparisons.

The Camp Tramp is larger, but actually weighs a "little" less. The Res-C handles always make blades lighter.

The weight difference is actually hard to notice. What is more noticable is the weight distribution. The Camp Tramp is more blade heavy. Which might be pretty obvious if you think about it. The Camp Tramp has a slightly longer blade and thicker blade with a lighter Res-C handle.

The Camp Tramp and Skinny ASH typically spec out as:

Camp Tramp............= 14.5 ounces; .24 - .25" thick; 7.325" blade; 12.5" oal

Skinny ASH (micarta)..= 15.25 ounces; .1875” thick; 6.4” blade; 12.0” oal

Skinny ASH (G10)......= 15.75 ounces

(* For anybody interested, I would be willing and interested in trading my MINT G10 for a brown or green (maybe black) handled Skinny ASH + $20 ). (* Don't ask for my Camp Tramp! )

My Camp Tramp is a little lighter than factory at about 13.5 ounces and thinner at about .236".
The coating and some metal have been removed from mine as I have stripped mine, slightly increased the size of the choil (closer to handle), and satin finished which included belt grinding to remove pits.

Both knives make great camp use knives and both are good hike/trail knives.

With it's larger and longer blade and more weight forward balance, the Camp Tramp is a better chopper while still retaining exceptional versatility and feel in the hand.

The Skinny ASH is more neutral in the hand and balanced. I feel the Skinny ASH is probably a "slightly" better task use knife, but the Camp Tramp is pretty easy to argue for being more versatile over-all.

Other comparable knives:

M6..........................= 16.2 ounces; .235" thick; 6" blade; 11.68" oal
Scrapper 6 LE............= 12.7 ounces; .268" thick; 6.25" blade; 11.44" oal
SJTAC….(stripped)...... = 13.0 ounces; .187” thick; 6.375” blade; 11.875” oal

Hell Razor.........= 14.75 ounces; .1875” thick; 6.625” blade; 12.75” oal (est.)
Skinny ASH (ASH1)..= 15.25 ounces; .1875” thick; 6.4” blade; 12.0” oal

SFNO..............= 16.5 ounces; .22” - .25” thick; 7.0” blade, 13.1” oal (est.)

SARSquatch....... = 17.0 ounces; .1875” thick; 7.0” blade; 12.75” oal
Yard Guard........= 16.0 ounces; .277" thick; 7.25" blade; 12.4" oal

The following are really a noticable amount heavier and or larger:

Ratweiler (orig.)……. = 20.1 ounces; .25” thick; 7.5” blade; 13” oal
Chopweiler - Micarta = 19.1 ounces; .25” thick; 7.5625” blade; 13.1875” oal
Chopweiler – G10….. = 20.5 ounces; .25” thick; 7.5625” blade; 13.1875” oal

ASH1 – CG……………….= 21.0 ounces; 0.320” thick; 6.4” blade; 12.0” oal
NMSFNO………………….= 21.5 ounces; .25” thick; 8.1875” blade

FSH (full flat grind)..= 22.0 ounces; .27” thick; 8.1875” blade; 14.4” oal

Dog Father………….. = 20.1 ounces; .275” thick; 10” blade; 15.125” oal
Dog Father LE…….. = 17.0 ounces; .250” thick; 10.0625” blade; 15.125” oal
Battle Rat……………. = 16.5 ounces; .250” thick; 9.375” blade; 14.4375” oal

Yeah... That looks like black G10.

For the record, the picture with the all black Skinny ASH is not mine. Nor is picture and knives of the ones on the log. All of the red background pics and the pics on the granite are mine.

I usually try to remember to give credit to others when I borrow their pictures. But, I copy a LOT of pictures from the forums and save to my files. I don't usually notate who I borrowed the pictures from and often these days the pictures I borrow may have been previously borrowed as well. So, I just usually notate borrowed pics from others or similar. (* I went back and added a notation of "Borrowed pics").

Busse doesn't finish their micarta very well (IMO). They leave it too rough - unfinished. But, Busse's black G10 tends to look pretty nice. For a while there, I was getting a lot of "Fuzzies" on my micarta and leaning towards preferring G10 as the G10 just comes much more finished "looking" from Busse than their micarta. G10 doesn't have fibers that are prone to fuzz. G10 uses fiberglass mesh as opposed to cotton canvas in canvas micarta. But, G10 is heavier and a little hard feeling in the hand. While micarta is lighter and has a very nice tactile feel in the hand. And some of my recent pieces from Busse haven't had as many "loose" fuzzies although still a little fuzzy (IMO).

I actually like the "looks" of Busse's paper micarta a LOT because paper micarta doesn't really fuzz so much either. But, I have honestly never handled any of the paper micarta to judge weight and feel.

I have the linen micarta on my SARSquatch, but it is about as rough (in spots) as canvas micarta. Then smoother in some spots. Basically... finish is spotty. But, I am sure I can fix it easier. I just haven't gotten around to stripping my SARSquatch yet. It will be a user for sure. ...... Not sure why I am so reluctant to at least beat on some of my knives with the coatings. But, I just have it in my head that I dislike coatings so much that I haven't taken a coated blade with intent to use in years. I think the only two I can remember using with a coating were my Battle Rat and HRLM - which I quickly stripped.... reprofiled, sharpened and improved!

I have a black G10 Ratmandu and a Chopweiler that looks very nice. But, the G10, while it looks nice, is noticably heavier in the hand - which I don't care for so much. I don't mind it in my Chopweiler so much, but I am not fond of it on the Ratmandu. So, my Ratmandu user is my micarta one. And my G10 one doesn't get used.

I was pretty big on G10 for Busse and Swamp Rat handles at first. But, because of the weight, I am more and more leaning back to prefering micarta and just working with the micarta to make it look better. I really don't like having to put so much effort into "fixing" micarta to make it look "finished", but with Busse, that is how it is. Sharpening is another issue I just have had to "accept".

I think the G10 was a $40 upgrade on the ASH if I remember correctly. I haven't used my black and tan G10 because I think I want to trade for micarta.

I wish Busse used more black and darker brown micarta. The tan is OK and I like black, but I also like green and darker brown. Most other makers only charge about $5 - $10 more for green or darker brown micarta.

I have seen a few pieces of tigerhide and snakeskin that looked nice, but I honestly don't like most of them - especially if to orange or with smooth mags.

Thank you for the extensive comparison KnifeGuy! Really interesting!
For your records I have an ASH1-CG and it weights 595 grams (19.1 ounces?), like the NMSFNO (590g).

OK, that's just scary - how similar blade-sizes and weights between the Camp Tramp, ASH1, SFNO, Hell Razor, SJTAC and others. WOW! MAkes me rethink what I'm trying to do with my collection. I keep buying blades of the approx same size.

Altho I might pick up a Skinny ASH before they are gone - I must say that teh one I got for a USMC buddy of mine is VERY sweet. Shockingly so.

Happy to provide. Glad you like and find helpful.

Thanks for the ASH1-CG weight info. I don't have the CG and while I have some reference sources for other Busse knives, I haven't been able to find the weight for the CG ASH1.

I was thinking 19.1 ounces seemed pretty light for the massively thick ASH1-CG. So, I checked an online weight calculator that showed: 595 gram = 20.98800736 ounce (I'll go ahead and call that 21.0 ounces - since some Busse blades have slight weight differences. )

Also, I weigh my NMSFNO at 21.5 ounces (posted above). So, 21 - 21.5 or so sounds about right. Again, with some slight variation to your 590 grams. But, I don't think it is uncommon for Busse blades to have variations of a half an ounce or so. For that matter, I have read on the Busse forum that some of the NMSFNO's had some slight variation in thickness as well.

I don't actually have a highly accurate gram scale either. I have a pretty decent postage scale that only measures to half ounces and a spring scale that I estimate down to about a quarter ounce or so. But, the spring scale is only good up to 16 ounces - so smaller knives. I have a gram scale on my list of things to pick up some day. But, I have a LOT of things on my list (and bills ) and my Busse and kin addiction is killing me and the rest of my list.

In any event, for all to know, there are variations in weights from knife to knife within the same design. So, give or take a half ounce or so and sometimes even more.
