Thise of you who read my posts or who have purchased knives from me know that I sharpen most of my hard use knives by convexing them on a belt grinder. Well, yesterday, after prompting by Horn Dog, I decided to try a little different technique while grinding away on the Delta. Instead of sharpening/grinding using the standard "edge down" or belt running away from the edge, I switched it around to the "edge in" or belt running into the edge method.

I must say that I think I like it better. Ever though I recently had surgery on both hands and arms over the last three months and have not been able to use my grinder, I was able to pick up this new tchnique right away. Now, I will say that you must pay very close attention should you decide to try this method, and I DO NOT recommend it for the first timer or for someone with very little experience using a belt grinder, but overall I think it gives better control and vision.

I did get a bit a bit cocky after about the first two or three minutes and I shredded one of my favorite well worn belts... , lesson learned! I was smart and tried it out on a buddies DMDC instead of one of my own knives first !

Thanks for telling me to give it a try Vic.

I also worked over a new 12" Tramontina that had been needing an edge put on it...

Nice even grinds, Tolly. Sorry about that 15 micron belt. Pit's Tracker ate one of mine.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

Yeah Vic, I think I can actually grind more even this way than the old way. I like it!

I've got plenty of belts, but that particular 15 micron was an old friend , truth be known, at this point it was probably closer too 6 or 7 microns. I know that sounds silly to most people, but sometimes you get a belt juuussst right. Know what I mean?

That's some fine lookin edge work there Tolly!

Vic graced me with a Scrapper Six that has that same eat your fingers off edge on it. I sometimes just watch TV while holding it and wiggeling it back and forth as I watch the edge speak to me of Spring around the corner and things to cut.
From November to April we have a constant snow cover here in Wisconsin and I have cabin fever sumptin bad.

Thanks Tolly for sharing your success on the Delta! It takes me to a very happy place to see a edge like that!

Peace.

Thanks for the compliment PoP. I'm just happy to be back using the grinder again. The hand/arm surgeries sucked. If I had to do them again I wouldn't do them so close together.
