On the belt sanders, what's the pro/con of 1" vs 2" width? Also 30" vs 42" length?

Bill - I have only used my belt sander on a few knives and machetes, but it is a 4" X 36" sander. That size belt is rather difficult to find around here, whereas the 1" belts are more plentiful. HornDog is the person to ask! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Vic, next time you are in the Atlanta area I want to buy you lunch and have you give me a few tips on sharpening with a belt sander.
Have you ever considered doing a video for YouTube so the Dogs here can learn a thing or two? Have you ever done a tutorial anywhere?

On the belt sanders, what's the pro/con of 1" vs 2" width? Also 30" vs 42" length? The really nice expensive knife making belt grinders use the wider belts. All I have ever used is a 1" belt. The 42" seems to run cooler than the 30".
