Okay guys, I thought I would throw this one out there just to see if anyone else had ever had this little thought cross their mind. As of late I have been thinking about how cool it would be to have a SAR style knife from the ScrapYard. I have been thinking something like a cross between the RatManDu and the DMCG for the blade design and size(no more than 5"-5.5"), but with thicker stock than the RMDs .188". Maybe stick with .250" for blade thickness, or at least .220". Then, put a nice full size Res-C handle on it and not one of the small handles like the D-mutts and Yard Keepers have. Thumb ramb ramp with jimping, and a choil that is rounded instead of flat, but not too big.

I also think it would be kind of cool to see it offered in a satin finish with a bright orange Res-C handle, as well as other options. One of those other options that I think would absolutely rock would be a special edition 154CM model that was .250" thick. I realize I may be alone in wishing for bright orange Res-C and a SE model in 154CM, but overall what do y'all think of the Search and Rescue Scrapper???

i like everything about it except for being too thick. 3/16" max, but id prefer thinner.

The only problem with that Mag is that a true SAR knife needs to be capable of being used as a prybar if need be. Sure, a .188"(3/16") blade made from SR77 would probably be okay, but I was thinking .220" just to be safe. And, the 154CM version should it ever be made would certainly need to be a little beefier to withstand the abuse I would think.

I've been wrong before though.

A new knife from the Yard is always a good idea! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

mmm. i draw a distinction between a search and rescue knife and a survival knife. do search and rescue crews use their knives for prying? i would think they know the conditions and circumstances they will encounter and arrive with the right tools for the job.

only speculating. i would still buy something like you described, but i'd prefer a bit thinner stock, possibly mudder gripped, and a sheath option. the sheath is a critical aspect, in my opinion.

still, my suggestions aren't necessary as i already have the orange mora craftsman. great knife with the custom kydex from kiahs.

Sounds like a Dumpster Mutt with a bigger handle. Those are little beasts. They would do for a SAR knife, I would think.

I agree here. However, i say stick with SR77 and coat the blade. black coating and orange rec c grips.... hell yea i'd buy one. not in 154CM and LE though.

I have read this about 10 times and would go along with it in any steel. I do like mags suggestion of mudders- but I dearly love those grips <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Yes, I agree, mudders would definitely be best! Maybe even a slightly bigger mudder grip.

As for what SAR crews do with their knives it greatly depends on the type of area and the kind of SAR team. A lot of times SAR teams don't want to carry a bunch of gear because they might be moving through rough terrain and trying to cover a lot of ground. Also, a lot of SAR team members are already carrying a lot of weight in medical type supplies and that type of thing instead of other tools, so a knife that you could "do-it-all" with would be a good thing.

When it comes right down to it though, any ScrapYard SAR type knife would be designed more for the masses and not as a true SAR knife.

And again as discussed in other threads, a coated blade would give no advantage over a satin finished blade except for price.
