i know black is the forefather of everything tactical but since we started fighting in the deserts and mountains of iraq and afghanistan tan and/or coyote brown have lost their innocence and are now what OD green used to be.

i ask this because i am buying a new backpack for the B.O.B. i keep in the trunk and i want it to be "low-key".therefor i want the least tactical color and while MOLLE straps are great they scream military/tactical so none of them either.

i've decided on the 3-day pack from EAGLE because while i dont want it to look military/tactical i want the proven reliability and performance of something that is and its a great pack for the money.

EAGLE makes some packs designed specifically for my problem that come in more inconspicuous colors like blue but they cost twice as much and i just dont like them.while the 3-day can look a little bit tactical if in the right color i think it could fly under the radar a majority of the time,especially to the untrained eye.

so which is less tactical/military,black or tan/coyote brown??

I just ordered a new Maxpedition in khaki. Khaki has been around for years. Just stay away from camo, unless you are down in Georgia where it's fashion statement.

To me black says tactical, swat, and mall ninja. Anything that has molle straps and is not black says military.

I actually went and put my molle strap packs in the sell pile because I decided they looked too military/tactical. I have moved to the "hiker" look and I have found that the best way to blend is to look like I came from REI.

If I was ever in a situation where I didn't want to be seen for some reason I can put on a poncho or pack cover and blend into the woods. In every other situation I really WANT to be seen when I'm outdoors, i.e. (1) I'm easier to spot for my friends so we can stay together on a hike, (2) I won't get shot at by an overanxious hunter, (3) if I need to be rescued I'm more visible.

My gear is a blend of tan, grey, blue, & red... I'm a real fashion statement. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

I recommend "urban camo". And by that I mean, forget the color, buy whatever you like best personally. Then, keep your pack in a tied up garbage bag in your truck. Then, to any thieves it will look worthless. I do that a lot with my Maxpedition or North Face pack. For smaller bags I use a Goodwill or Dollar Store bag that looks equally worthless.

I've EDC'd a black Maxpedition Pigmy Falcon to work and every where else for years without any problems. Black has always seemed like the safest, most commonly excepted all around choice to me.
