OK all you wanna be commandos! A knife is a weapon of last resort, but it is deadly. We don't do duels anymore. If I must defend myself against deadly force using a knife, then I must attack without hesitation. My first choice is to avoid conflict altogther if possible. And my first choice of weapon is a pistol. And with a pistol, I will be trying my best to disengage by backing up while firing.

That makes a whole lot of sense. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

No duels. Attacks are NOT fair fights between gentlemen.
If attacks are ever 1 on 1, they are with overwhelming odds going towards the
attacker.
He isn't going to come at you face to face like in the movies or on UFC.
You aren't going to get a chance to fight back, he's going to hit you from
just outside your peripheral vision range (or from behind), with complete
surprise and with overwhelming force. That bad guy attacking you isn't
interested in giving you a chance to do anything.
He wants you down and out and completely vulnerable at his/her/their mercy...period, end of story.

Situational awareness is the key. Being aware of your surroundings, developing
the ability to discern "interviews", things like that.
That awareness gives you an extra little bit of time to either avoid the
situation, or at least to be able to draw your weapon.
It gives you a fighting chance to survive.

I love the statement about "would be commandos". I don't want to be one of
those, I want to be someone who can take his walks in safety and with peace
of mind <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Well I've trained a little in knife fighting, and the Ratmandu or even my Howling rat would be decent.I think that the Yard hook was designed for fighting but it's a little heavy. Most Scrapyard knives are made as very heavy-duty utlity knives and a pure fighter is much lighter. But I hope that I never have to fight end up in a knife fight, most times both people get cut pretty bad.Now if I'm out say with the family and a group of a#$holes is threatening me then I feel that a knife is quite an equalizer!

Yeup.

As a guy who's carried a gun and knife for over 20 years now, I have to agree with you 100% on that.

Thugs are rarely trained and often on controlled substances. Not like the sophisticated gentlemen we have here on the forum!

If you don't have any training in self defense, get some.

Stay out of areas that the thugs are in.

Keep the homestead well lit and have two big dogs in the yard.

Have plenty of ammo.

A man asked "Sir, why do you carry a 45?"

He replied "Because they don't make a 46."

Silly question, bring a gun to a sword fight, a sword to a knife fight and a dog father to anything from the Yard.

Size matters.

Beyond that, run
