So, I've had a really bad day.

I shave with a straight razor, have for the past 8 years. But, this morning, my razor decided to snap in a nice ragged zigzag along half the length of the blade, so the damage can't be sharpened out. Fortunate for me, this happened while I was stropping it, not while shaving

Anyone know of any companies that sell these still?

I really like the Dovo Classics for the money. Depending on which one you choose you should be able to get a nice NEW Pre-Sharpened one for $77-$100. There are a few good places to buy from, in my opinion the two best places to buy from are Classuc Shaving and Straight Razor Desgins

Makes me wonder; how many other guys on here like to use the old style straight razor shaving method, instead of the disposables????

I don't shave very often.. I have a beard 95% of the year. When i do shave, it usually takes scissors, trimmers, and then a razor to get me going..

I've got a Norelco that has been great. I noticed at WalMart they have 250 dollar electric razors! Isn't that nuts?

I've never shaved or been shaved w/an oldschool razor. Seems like it would pull the hair, ouch.

No, it doesn't pull the hair. In fact, there is no better shave in the world than a straight razor! I'm serious, you really should try it. If there is an old barber in your area at a "real" Barber Shop. stop by and let him give you a shave with a straight razor. You'll be wanting to purchase one soon after!

i got one for christmas i cant get down. i think its not sharp enough but i dont have any way to sharpin it

There are plenty of ways to get a straight razor sharp, cheaply, and easily.

Have you heard of the mouse pad method? You place various grits of sandpaper 600-2000, on a piece of mousepad and strop it. There's a lot info on this method online. Then you can strop it on a old leather belt with some compound/polishing rub (which you can get cheaply from sears). And since the razor is straight, you don't have to worry about turning the blade, just keep it straight all the way through!

This method will work for your knives as well.

Well hell new blades for the Norelco are 35 bucks. I guess a little more than double for something that should last for years isn't a bad buy. I'd have to start buying shaving cream.

Anyone who is wondering how to sharpen a straight razor, just go to youtube and type in stropping, you'll see some vids there. Actually, any type of stropping vid can be found there. I used to be deadset against straight razors, feared I'd slit my throat, until I visited a barber shop run by an older Greek gentleman. He convinced me to try it; Best shave I had in my life, period! He helped get me set up with the gear, and was willing to pass on to "an interested youngster" (As he liked to call me <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />) for a cup of Timmies coffee when I came to visit. I don't think I could ever go back to disposables; It feels so good to throw that hot towel on in the morning to soften the skin, massage the face, and then start to shave. It gets you in the mood to face the day.

I use an old fashioned belt designed for stropping razors (You can buy them from specialty stores, or even online from the sites Tolly mentioned ($$ ranges, depending on quality; I spent $90 CAD on mine, and it's still plenty fine 8 years later). The paste you can buy from just about anywhere; I usually pick mine up from either Lee Valley, or the local Princess Auto store, depends whos' got the better deal on.
