Yesterday was a pretty nice day, in the beginning. So, I snatched up my mutt and SOD and went out to the front yard. I found this small maple tree that was growing into one next to it so it had to come down. This one screamed mutt to me, and I'd never really used it. So I set the SOD to the side and commenced to chopping, with very poor technique, I might add. A little further: After this I set the camera to movie mode and recorded the horrible chopping technique for all to see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hVzMVXw7Aw Here are a few aftermath shots: Here's the little devil after wiping the edge off on my jeans and testing the sharpness on my arm. It would still shave - with all parts of the blade. SR77 is good stuff.

Nicely done Snotpig ....that DMDC has a lot more chopping ability than I thought Sharp edge retention as well

Nice pics, Snotpig. Yes Dumpster Mutts can chop. They are amazing for their size.
Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

Great looking blade and terrain there. I guess I need to keep an eye out for a DMDC now!

i can't fault your technique since you are using such a small knife. technique is supposed to exploit the mass or length of the blade. considering, i think you did a pretty good job. not even breathing heavy, which you see in most youtube videos.

nice job snotpig looks like you had decent chip removal. that DM did chop quite well for a smaller blade. did you get to do any chopping with the SOD at all?

Thanks, guys. I'd never used the mutt, other than to sharpen it on my HF. I ended up with and extended grip on the blade, with on finger off the rear of the handle to get effective chopping from it. It wasn't optimal (is there such a thing?), but it worked pretty well esp for its size. While I prefer the Chopweiler for tasks like this, it was interesting to see what the mutt could do. I haven't gotten around to using the SOD yet, either. It would probably be 2-3x faster, probably on the order of what the Chopweiler could do.
The tree should be easier to chop with the tree horizontal. I'll see if I can get pics today.
The terrain is my back yard. I'm an outdoorsman at heart (not my day job though) and consider myself very lucky to live here. Our house backs up to a really steep hill/bluff with mountain laurel (I love that stuff) and trees all over it - the hill, not the house.
