Rain like crazy here. I might get out tomorrow anyway and see if I can eye some cool pics. I love the color that your camera gets. Keep them coming.

MEGA RAIN here, almost 100mm in the last three hours.

anyways, i took off for a few hours up the Sea to Sky Hiway to my favorite quarry in the woods.

[Linked Image from i37.photobucket.com]

Brought along a bunch of flashlights so i could take beam shots. [color:"yellow"]Unfortunately, the rain came down so hard that the water drops affected the Auto Focus. Most of the following pics are blurry as a result and there is water on the lens too....sorry...

ENTERING THE RING, THE CONTENDERS:
[Linked Image from i37.photobucket.com]

The Setup.

I placed [color:"red"]RED D.O.T. C2 reflective truckers tape at 50 yards from the camera, and [color:"white"]WHITE D.O.T. C2 reflective truckers tape at 150 yards from the camera (100 yards from the RED tape) . So the red is 50 yards from the cam, the white is 150 yards. Camera is set on 10MP, 1600 ISO. Please note there is a plastic bag half over the lens in a (poor) attempt to keep the lens free from water drops.....the beamshots actually cover more ground and trees but got shrouded a bit....

The Lights!

To help pass the time while waiting for the pics to upload, here is a review of Rite-In-The-Rain notebooks!!

I have a whole whack of these, from the little spiral notebook to the binder sized field journal and everything in between....

My writing instrument of choice is a standard construction pencil. Tonight, despite the POURING rain, i wrote down the photo sequences of the flashlight while i was shooting beam shots. I ripped out a sheet of RITR paper and put it on the hood of the truck. The wet hood made the paper stick nicely, and the wind could not blow off the paper. while i was writing on the paper it got completely covered with about 2mm of water. I was still able to write clearly and the pencil lead did not rub off despite the water.

I give RITR paper and notebooks a BUSHMAN5 <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> , which means i like them and highly recommend them.

If i was to do this light comparison again, i would bring a 2nd tripod and clamp each light onto it, and level them.......oh well..good times

Todays off road drive and hike!

dont know where to start, what a day! high centered the truck, hiked for hours to about 5000 feet above sea level, found a piece of fatwood, drank icy cold creek water, took tons of pictures, chopped down some trees, broke my camera's tripod mount, scared off a bear with bear bangers, ate snickers bars, chopped stuff, found an old Mineral Claim marker from 1963, and the damnedest thing of all........CHICKENS! yes CHICKENS! BIG CLUCKING CHICKENS! in the middle of NO WHERE on a decommissioned (since 1985) logging road! CHICKENS! WTH! how they have'nt been eaten yet by the eagles, hawks, cougars, bobcats, coyotes and bears is beyond me.

So anyways, thats the teaser of my day today......got about 4GB of pictures to upload, not even gonna do a post edit on them, i'll be here all night....

Sunny DAY! on my way to Garibaldi Mountain area, 20 klicks past Squamish BC. Made a pit stop at my favorite old quarry at Deeks Creek
[Linked Image from i491.photobucket.com]

the climbing area about 1km in form the hwy, up a decommissioned forestry road

SHE IS HOT!!!! MEEEEOOOOW!!!! RAWR RAWR RAWR!!!

rubble zone (this area had(and will have) volcanic activity and MAJOR mountain shearing debris zones. There is another mountain area further up the hwy that has regular checks by the CDN Military Engineers. It is expected that approx 50 million cubic meters of mountain will slide soon! yay
[Linked Image from i491.photobucket.com]

starting up the decommissioned spur road off the decommissioned trunk line, currently at 2000 feet above sea level
[Linked Image from i491.photobucket.com]

I love meandering old roads like this:
[Linked Image from i491.photobucket.com]

still going up, road is getting narrower.
[Linked Image from i491.photobucket.com]

stopped for a walkabout away from the truck, (gear pics!) Moved my FAK pouch from the belt to the front of the chest rig. Got my BK9 and GB SFA on the harness loops:

Oh the valley below is the Sqaumish/Paradise valley. I'm now at 3000 feet

side shot, cant resist, i LOVE this setup!

there is tons of these moss covered rocky plateaus, perfect for camping....
[Linked Image from i491.photobucket.com]

everywhere you look is spruce and pine, GREEN GREEN GREEN!!! (and tons of dead trees too, lots of firewood!)
[Linked Image from i491.photobucket.com]

starting hitting the snow line, lost traction backed down the road and gunned er again. This spot does'nt look steep....it is.....
[Linked Image from i491.photobucket.com]

BUG!!!! (on a milage marker)
[Linked Image from i491.photobucket.com]

looking back after one of the curves:
[Linked Image from i491.photobucket.com]

a early 60's BC Mineral Title claim marker. I should have grabbed this when i left, these are rare and VERY collectible. These red tags are the predecessors to the bigger steel signs and then the aluminum claim signs. Nowadays every thing is done online. Its a shame, it used to be quite the honor and ceremony to "stake" a claim and post your claim tags - good for FIFTY years. ..... (this particular claim has lapsed, as the owner is now deceased.)
[Linked Image from i491.photobucket.com]

I kept on driving up the increasingly rough and hard to drive road. The water bars were getting deeper and deeper. At one point i high centered the truck and was able to pivot it with my hand on the hood.......Had to jack up all four corners and place flat rocks underneath the tires. then i spent an hour digging out the "hump" with the pickaxe. Pushed the truck off the rocks, jumped in and gunned it out the water ravine.

got to this point and that was it, could'nt go anymore in the truck. This riprap water bar was about 3 feet deep and 3 feet wide.
[Linked Image from i491.photobucket.com]

DEER track in the snow!
[Linked Image from i491.photobucket.com]

the snow patches seemed to come and go. Here the road keeps on going. i have GOT to get an ATV for these roads! This section i could have driven on, but the truck was on the other side of the riprap water bar
[Linked Image from i491.photobucket.com]

road getting steeper:

walked on further, checking my six for animals (bears, cougars etc). paused to fill up my freezer bag with icy cold stream water, mmmmmm.

Kept on walking. Got to a spot overgrown with alders (i think). Perfect time to make a video of the BK9 and the GB axe chopping!

VIDEOS LOADING STILL! !

FYI, these trees grow like WEEDS here, chopping two down is not an issue, because a gazillion more will pop up next year...besides, there is a stream that needed a foot bridge.

Found some scat, looks like cougar.

Then i found bear scat.

Not good. I pulled out my bear banger kit and pocketed a few rounds. One in the chamber , so to speak....i threaded a round into the launcher. Pre-emptive strike, i fired off a few rounds, the BOOOOOMS echoing thruout the little valley and off the rock bluffs.

VIDEO LOADING!

I spotted a brown bear sniffig the air (yeah i was pretty stinky, sweating hard! ) high up on the bluffs, he skedaddled when the bangers went off. I still kept one loaded and two more ready....

passed by a rock bluff with a old stump, bleached from the sun, yet home to a few birds!

more rock bluffs and trees
