On AR15.com a few months back, some doofus posted pics of himself trying to be a tough guy... and tons of people photoshopped funny text, and other stuff into his pictures as jokes at his expense, and posted them. He whined and cried to the site staff, threatened to sue, have the site shut down, said they were violating his rights to his own material, etc., and they actually locked the thread, until Ed Sr. read the Photobucket user agreement. Then he opened it back up for more hijinx.

IF they don't want their photos taken, then they need to password-protect the Photobucket account, and not post pics from it they don't want all over the internet.

Oddly enough, that type of usage is actually protected under Parody laws. It is completely OK to take the image and modify it as a new work. There are some limitations, but for the most part the site would be in the clear.

Dan's album was supposed to be password protected and was not due to a glitch on PB's end.

Sorry to be a stickler, but this is how I used to make a living. The ease of copying images and sharing them has made life for photographers very hard nowadays.

So is it illegal to copy pictures and post them on forums?

If you don't own them, then technically, YES. There are some exceptions, such as news and education, but if the image is copyrighted(and all of them are at the time of creation) it is illegal to post in a forum. Is it enforced? Rarely, but it's still illegal.

Also, Dan's PB account was supposed to be private which means the terms do not apply. Even with the terms they have listed there have been successful lawsuits for images being used commercially that originated from a PB account.

Not everything on the web is free <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/paperbag.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Well since you are in the photo business, I trust that you know about these things, Ted. I never intended to break any laws when I posted the picture.

Someone also speculated the mudders where larger than normal, anyone other speculation?

With everything else, once in a while I go back and watch this to remind myself how to behave: How to behave on an internet forum linked for amusement, not directed at anyone <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

The CG should cost less than a RatManDu. Res-C is cheaper than Micarta or G10. IIRC, the RatManDu sold for $138.95. By comparison, the last Dumpster Mutt (the DMDC) sold for $89.95. So I'll split the difference and guess $114.95 + S/H for the S5 CG.

That just put a smile on my face!

If it's INFI, then I'll be getting a one for sure, the LE if I can afford it,
but the CG for sure. Maybe even 2 if possible.

If it's 154CM, then 2 for sure. The LE and CG.

Either way, there's at least one S5 in my future.

On the subject of posting pictures....
If I ever "borrow" a picture, first,I download it
and then copy it up to my photobucket or whatever.
Should not just link to the guys picture.(uses someone elses BW)
I will give credit to the guy by stating
"photo borrowed from www.xxxyyyzzz.cam"
3rd,I would not use someone elses picture to try and make money.
Such as borrow one of HornDogs knife pictures
to sell one of MY knives... That would be wrong I think.
I dont think anyone would be really upset enough to
sue you if follow the above and just
use common sense.

Thanks for the insight, Ted. Of course, the images posted here and on the Busse forum were never intended to be used commercially. And no one besides Dan had any way of knowing that his images were meant to be private. As Dan mentioned, the fact that they weren't private was an error on Photobucket's part. Nevertheless, your points are valid.

bld522,

I think it's time to let this go. It was wrong to do. Period. Do you think that all matters of privacy, morality, honor, and integrity are clearly defined and protected by the law? Do you really think that I wanted the pictures posted publicly? Do you? If so you're drinking more than I am.

Let it go. Let's move on,

Dan
