I am still a pound puppy and new to the site. Thanks everyone for the great comments !!! I have 2 busse knives, but the scrapper 5 will be my first scrap yard as I just missed the scrap muk. My question is I would like to know what through-hardened SR101 is ??? I have knives in INFI and 154CM. I havent used the INFI, buts its legendary. I love the 154CM I have in my benchmade. But, what is through-hardened SR101 ??? Any info would be extremely helpful.

Hey there, and welcome to the Yard. Through hardened SR101 is, to my understanding, 52100 steel with the proprietary Busse heat treat. What makes it "through" hardened is that the entire blade is the same hardness. Since SR101 is not quite as tough as SR77 or INFI, larger SR101 blades from the Swamp were differentially hardened. That is, about the first three quarters of an inch away from the edge is full hardness, while from that point to the spine is softer. I hope this makes sense. If not, hopefully someone else can explain it better!

Welcome and great explanation!
Through hardened is what makes Scrappers like TANKS.
I am so stoaked about Yard 101 for a change! It takes a much keener edge and sharpens easier than SR-77 so welcome it I will!
Peace.

Infi and SR77 are so tough that they can get away with through hardening on high-impact prone blades, i.e. choppers.
All of the larger SR101 knives (over 7") are differentially hardened to leave the body of the blade softer and the edge harder. The softer body gives the blade additional shock absorption and toughness. On blades that are not realistically going to see a lot of chopping action, through hardening for SR101 makes sense.

dl351 and VoxHog summed it up nicely. If the Scrapper 5 turns out to be 3/16" thick, it will be roughly the equivalent of a RatManDu with a Res-C mudder handle. I realize you're new, nyefmaker. So I'm not sure if you've aware of the RatManDu's reputation. But many consider it to be the finest 5" EDC/Utility Knife ever made. And it's constructed of through-hardened SR101. Here's a pic of a RatManDu for reference: ![[Linked Image from i159.photobucket.com]](http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t141/bld522/Ratmandu_03.jpg) The Scrapper 5 CG in through-hardened SR101 is going to be a winner. If you get one, you will love it. PS: Welcome to The Yard. Bruce, I'll put my DMCG up against the Ratmandu in the 5 inch category ANYDAY. No comparison in myopinion. while the ratmandu is a nice knife and carries well, it isnt anywhere near the DMCG IMO

this is big to me. I have said it many times before. I think sr101 is a far better steel than s7. it will stay sharp much longer.

I have been thinking about a RMD but with the S5 pending release that idea might hit the back burner. I am really digging the S5.
