I hope the AR bubble does burst. I would like one, but not at these prices.

So what do you think Boots? It looks like the Ruger 10/22 is a popular choice....
If you want a centrefire cartridge in a rifle the Mini 14 .223 from Ruger is also a good choice....
What are your thoughts?

CZ makes some VERY nice and accurate rimfire rifles, and so does Kimber.

Love those CZs. I have owned two and am ordering another soon. They used to be cheap, but now the word is out! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

For the first time buyer , get the 10/22...you won't regret it. Build a "tool box" or battery of guns...they are tools. A good .22 , bolt gun , tactical rifle , Shotgun and a couple of handguns would make a good basic Tool Box.

You should look into a Kel-Tec SU-16 Or SU-22.

I really like my Remington 597. Remington made a huge mistake by releasing this gun with magazines that wouldn't feed right. They have now fixed the problem but they did a huge amount of damage to the rep of this gun by shipping them out with crappy magazines. I've had very good results with the bulk Federal ammo packs (36 grain, copper plated hollow points). I get better groups with it than 10/22's I've shot and I'm not sure if he's a crappy shot (I think he is) but I've been out shooting my buddy that has a Marlin bolt action .22. My only problem with the 597 is the trigger. Its a pretty heavy pull for a .22 trigger but an easy fix is to get an aftermarket VQ hammer. From my reading this will cut the trigger pull in half and greatly improve the feel. good luck on your quest!

I know they may seem old fashioned to younger shooters, but the little Henry lever action is one sweet shooting .22 with a smooth action. It will feed shorts, longs, or long rifles and is surprisingly accurate. Mine shoots as well as my Ruger 10/22 with the right ammo. It won't match a heavy barreled 10/22 or 77/22, but for such a light easy handling rifle, it is plenty accurate for small game. As I mentioned before, I wouldn't worry about getting a high powered rifle until you have a 22 and become good with it. The .22 is a most versatile caliber and much easier on the ears and the budget than a .223 or other centerfire rifle. And you can get a very fine .22 for less than a .22 conversion kit for an AR-15 or other .223 semi-auto. Later on, a good centerfire might be a useful thing to have, but I consider a .22 a basic necessity in any household.
Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

not bad shootin' HD. I had a quarter that with a hole in the center that I put there with my .22 as a kid. carried that quarter for years, only to lose it in Airborne school.

That's a penny sized dot at 40 meters. I was trying different ammo that day.
