I have seen so many variations on the 10/22, Ruger ought to just sell the receivers by themselves! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Looks good, Simon.

hah!

Can someone tell me waht kind of distance to drop a deer with the .22?

I figured you could, but thought you needed to be too close to pull it off in practice...

I have a good friend who dropped four of them with 22 LR standard velocity rounds fired from an Anschutz. All the shots were less than 50 yds. I have not done it, and will not hunt with anyone who does. In the thick cover down here, most shots are less than 75 yds regardless of the caliber used. With a 22, shot placement is critical, head shots only. I would not recommend using a 22 for deer hunting, as it is not legal and not the optimum caliber for big game. I was only suggesting it as an emergency survival option. This is not news. It is well known by poachers that a 22 head shot will kill a deer. While I have had many opportunities to do this during squirrel season before deer season opened, I did not need the meat badly enough to risk losing my jeep, hunting rights, and going to jail for taking game out of season with an unapproved caliber on a State WMA. But a well placed head shot with a 22 within 50 yds or so will definitely kill a deer.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

Gotcha. My dad's anschutz was so accurate it was almost boring to shoot! A great piece of machine work thought it was.

I am not thinking of plinking a deer with one in the least, just curious around how to pull it off. Dad instilled a respect for animals we hunted and wanted them killed as humanely as possible. Leaving an animal injured/crippled by using the wrong tool (except in emergency of course) would not have been entertained.

Thanks...

i just got a 10/22 a month or so ago. still haven't had a chance to shoot it... lots of accessories and mods out there. i got a new ati folding stock and a couple hot lips mags. i think i may get the barrel cut down and threaded. i bought this one as a "just for fun" gun. i plan to get a second one to set up sniper style and i'm even thinking about getting a charger to plink with as well.

The 22 needs to be first. If you get something else later, that's fine, but the lowly 22 is the true working man's rifle. It can be used for pest control, small game hunting and even deer hunting in a survival emergency. I have a friend who used a 22 Anschutz for "discreet" deer hunting. One shot to the head and they all dropped like a stone using quiet standard velocity match ammo. If you get a 10/22, while not recommended by experts, it can be quite a potent self or home defense weapon. You can get 25 or 30 rd mags for it. Lots of cheap firepower that is deadly at close range.

Best reply on this subject yet...IMHO the 10/22 is the best semi-auto .22 on the market today, in terms of reliability, cost, function, etc. I have other brands both old and new and this one is the berries. In terms of a first gun, and perhaps an only gun the .22 is the truest "survival" weapon (read firearm) one can own. You can carry more .22 ammo on your body than anything else and hide small caches of large quantities in very small places....Everyone should have a .22 for the SHTF secnario... but what do I know?...

Better that, get an AR in 5.56mm and a CMMG conversion kit in .22lr. Then you have the best of both worlds in about 45 seconds.

I think the AR bubble is about to bust. I am seeing rifles on tables at shows and on the dealers shelves now. However, you can tell who is priced and who isn't. Eventually the manufacturers will get caught up and people will start selling because they don't need the AR, school stuff, or credit card bills.

I know a couple weekends ago Model 1 Sales and M^A parts houses were at the Wannamacher Gun Show. There were plenty kits, they were sold out by sunday afternoon, but they had them. The guys at the booths were telling people that they could wait on their orders or get them there and cancel the orders. The problem is getting all the kits packed and shipped. A couple friends bought different configurations but I know one kit was flat top with lt wt brl, chrome lined brl, and everything except a lower receiver for like 485. A lower receiver can be had for around 110.00 and shipping/transfer so say 150. Right there is a functioning AR that will be good to go for 635. A CMMG kit is 200 bucks so that is 850 for a whole deal. Yeah, i know there are mags but I still see GI mags for 10 bucks and a local dealer is selling P-Mags, non-window, for 15 bucks. CMMG has the new .22lr mags for 20 bucks a piece.

The way I see it it is hitting 2 birds with one stone. Kinda ins. for BHO second term (if we are unlucky). With the kit a person can train for a lot less than 5.56mm and still have the option for small or large game.
