So, I just came back from a Ducks Unlimited dinner, where I was hoping to win the auction for one of several Robert Bateman prints that were up. I was in a bit of a sour mood, because this one very ignorant woman kept outbidding anyone who put bids in on the Bateman prints. She took them all!
Anyway, a little dejected, I bought some tickets for some raffles for decoys, etc., not winning anything, when they announced a live auction for several more prints. Well, there was one that really struck me, so I decided to stick around and see if maybe I could get it. Well, the auctionneer stated that bidding would start at $1000CAD! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> Well, I'm out.... maybe not. No one started bidding, the price droppped, and dropped, and dropped, to opening bids at $100! I put my hand up, and started going back and forth between myself and one other guy. I bid $250, thinking to myself if the bidding hit over $300, I'd have to give up. But, all of a sudden, my opponents wife grabs his arm, yelling," I don't want that thing hanging in my house!" I got it! Yes! I was so happy! So, I paid for the print, grabbed it, and headed to my car.
On the way out, I passed the other bidder and a few others, having a smoke. Apparently, another copy of the print I won had gone for auction for almost $1300CAD a couple months ago. When I asked why none of these guys had overbid me, they all gave the same answer; their wives wouldn't let them have it!
Here's the painting. I had to hang it right away. It's a canvas lithographic, numbered as 226 or 10,000! Very sweet!
The picture doesn't do the print justice, as the flash disallows you from seeing the shading and richness of the colours as the sun sets in the background. It's very amazing.
Does the name Terry Redlin ring a bell for any of you? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Apparently, this is one of several paintings he did in recognition of some American poem? The line quoted was:
God Shed His Grace on Thee, Golden Retreat, Good Evening, America, Good Morning, America, Guardian of Conservation Does anyone know anything about this poem, who wrote it, or what it is entitled?
