I heard soaking in vinegar helps but I have never tried it.

wont the vinegar cause a patina? I've used a scotchbrite pad in the past and it worked fine

soaking in vinegar will create a patina and help PREVENT rust... not get rid of it.
I would just use some wet/dry paper or a scotchbrite pad (I've also heard it works well) but I would be careful not to dull up the edge to much.
where is this rust?
maybe this would be a good time to post some pics or some beat up scrappers! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Green scotchbrite works great. You might want to put some wax or oil on the blade after for protection. Luck

I usually buff it off or sand it off with very mild sand paper (2000 grit or more)

I'm sure there are many other ways as well. Good luck!

Very fine steel wool or scotchbrite pad used lightly, usually takes care of any discoloration

oh yea another ? - does rust damage the strength of the break... for example, if its on the edge of the blade, does that make it more prone to chipping or breaking?
