either way, it's getting scratched and the coating will get smoothed from whatever so go beat the poor dog and sharpen it!

why is is bad to run the scotchbrite along the blade's edge?
If your using a scotchbrite pad with a power tool you could over heat the edge and ruin the temper of the steel. If you do it by hand you may have to resharpen the edge.

For rust right on the edge of the blade, a light stropping will work to take it off. Will probably make your edge just a touch sharper too

But seriously, your best bet is to just use the sucker! Chop something, baton some logs, put some scratches in that pretty CG coating.

RS: I just use a scotchbrit pad soaked (just a small corner usually works) in oil and scrub scrub scrub. Oh Yeah, you could always do like I did on a knife I bought in the Philippines. When you're done using it, just jab it into the ground 3 or 4 times, wipe it off on your pants leg and sheath it! After a while, you will see it won't hardly rust at all. (p.s. I have a shotgun that has rusted and been cleaned with the pad/oil combo so many times rust just slides off it).

The problem is the uncoated part at the bottom of the blade. I like to call that part the "edge". It is bare steel with no protection from the elements.

Option 1: You could send it back and get that part coated too. Then wrap the entire knife in cosmoline and put it in a hermetically sealed container with dessicant. Then put the whole thing in a climate controlled storage room, and leave it there forever.

Option 2: Use the darn knife!

RS, I found wiping the knife down after use with a Tuff-Cloth helps keeps the rust from getting started in the first place. I know the scotchbrite pads work great on the DMDC. I intentionally tried to make the DMDC rust. Left it in a live well all day. Took it out at the end of the day, dried it off then wiped it down with a Tuff-Cloth. After 4 days of this the knife did start to show signs of rust.

LOL...Option 1 is funny as hell HD. I wonder if someone will try that.
