I have not been here in quite a long time, but I have been lurking. I have just been working my butt off, but try to come on each day and read the posts.

I went to the Menomonee reservation last weekend with a friend who is Menomonee and stayed with his parents. This is near Suring WI and borders the Nicolet National Forest.

Here are random shots from both Saturday and Sunday from deep in the forest.

The gear we had,

Knives:

1.Busse FBM
2.SYK Dogfather
3.SAK Cadet
4.CRKT M-16
5.Leatherman Wave
6.Leatherman Micro scissors
7.Gerber Artifact prybar

Gear:

1. Canvas Korean surplus
2. Military web/gunbelt
3. Rainwalker sheath – worn both on the belt and on Sunday, worn on the shoulder strap that attaches/detaches
4. Watership Vineyard Haven Hat that I wear in Kenya
5. Garmin Legend HSX
6. My new British Stanley G-150 prismatic compass, it is all brass and painted in olive drab with a mother of pearl compass card. I will do another post on it.
7. Dalvey pocket compass
8. Camenga Compass
9. Chart divider and calipers
10. Two map cases

Food/Supplies:

1. Hotdogs (Saturday only)
2. Beer
3. Cigars
4. More beer
5. Pipe tobacco
6. More beer

There were ticks everywhere and all we did was hike and explore for two straight days. We only went back to his parents house to sleep and we did nothing but drink beer and smoke cigars for two and a half days.

Here are the pics:

At our break spot – plotting the next route. I used everything and the chart dividers are good for drawing things to scale. With beer.

British Stanley G-150 prismatic compass – Even though we used my GPS, I used this the most. I let Buzz hold the GPS so that I do not have to rely on it.

Lunch camp – Gathering wood, fire kit, knife/sheath shot and beer and dogs. Birch is great for a fire, but you all know that.

My friend chopped with the Dogfather…… Man that thing is a beast!!!!

On Sunday we drove on the old logging trails and it was getting dark. He does not really know this section and there were two fallen trees on the road, blocking us from getting out. Now we had been driving for a half hour up and down steep, rocky terrain and had two choices. One to go back and find our way on unmarked trails, driving aimless in the encroaching dark, or two chop the trees….. Hmmmmm, it was an easy decision! This is why we carry the gear that we have, just in case… Out came the axe and FBM. I chopped the branches and he chopped the trunk with the axe.

It was getting darker and after working on the larger tree, we decided to clear a trail into the woods and go around the fallen trees, instead of chopping the big one. We had to chop through the smaller one in order to move it to the side. Then, with the FBM I cut the branches and bramble out of the way, clearing a trail for the truck. There was a clearing on the other side of the fallen trees where it had been logged.

After everything was cleared I walked in front of the truck with my modified Mag light guiding him through, keeping an eye out for boulders, tree trunks and punji sticks from logging. He made a U-shape around the fallen trees onto the trail on the other side.

After we got out of the forest and onto the main road the biggest danger was yet to be faced!!!!!! We drove around, including to another town, but being Sunday night………….. All of the bars were……………. CLOSED!!!!!

Pic’s of the blockage,

We also visited Copper Culture Archaeological State park where there are burial mounds, on Sunday morning.

Of course, the whole time I was out there the Hamm’s beer commercial theme kept running through my head, just like last time.

Here is a link, just because: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oq6wYSo9uPM&feature=related

That's an awesome adventure, Dan. Pretty country too. Plenty of beer helps with the morale!

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

Nice pictures, Dan. Looks like you and Buzz had a great time. Water levels looked high. Beer is a good survival drink, definitely better than Gatorade

That's really cool. I wish we had a big abandoned tower like that around here!

Great pics.
looks like a good time.

I've been up several (two or three) fire towers in NJ and have actually seen smoke from them.

they're really cool.

once again, great pics.
