Are new scrapyard model designs occasionally based according to materials available? In other words is a model sometimes conceived because the blade shape fits on an INFI or SR-101 blank that was used by busse or swamp rat for a particular knife?

I don't know the answer, but I would say so. And I don't think that just applies to scrap yard, but busse and swamp rat as well. It just makes sense from a business perspective to make the most you can from a sheet of steel. Dan mentioned that he's trying to convince Jerry that if he uses a bigger stock, the leftover from a certain knife could make a S5.

I would tend to think that the idea of getting the most blades out of a piece of steel would be optimum. Yes, that is.

Until the last couple releases (and, of course, excluding the SS4, which was like a startup gift of INFI from Jerry), all of the non-stainless Scrap Yard knives were made of SR77. Dan has also posted that he's been trying to Jerry to release some more INFI for the S5LE, but thus far only the SS4 has been INFI (like a limited release of Bandicoots, the INFIcoots, were Swamp Rat's only INFI knife). The story is that Jerry bought tons of steel at auction when Camillus cutlery went under, and that's where the 154CM stainless came from. Up until recently, like most people, I'd have said that Swamp Rat makes SR101 knives and Scrap Yard makes SR77 knives, but that line is blurring, possible even disappearing. The short answer is that the business models have been changing, and I'm not sure if anyone outside of the Busse production group knows what will happen next.

Yeah the steels are all over the place. I purchased Busse family knives made from INFI, SR-101, SR-77, D2, and 154CM today. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" />
