I thought maybe the Swamp had signed with Nintendo. Totally misleading.

2-3 times a week with a basic free weight workout. I know that is barely enough, but it is better than nothing.

On the great survival fitness debate, never underestimate the value of fat. MustardMan already pointed out its insulating qualities, but it’s also the perfect food. Watch Survivorman and you’ll see that he starts each survival week with a modest roll. That’s not because he isn’t fit, it’s because he isn’t stupid. Like Survivorman, why not start off ahead of the game by bringing some supplies in a handy pre-attached fanny pack? Washboard abs aren’t necessarily what you need going into a survival situation, washboard abs are what you get from being a survival situation.

If you have any doubts about the level of fitness needed to whack stuff with a Waki, watch the video again, paying careful attention to the survival food packs carried by the participants.

Agreed KN........ but I would surely think one would want to be in the best physical condition possible. Guys like Tyger-mag and others are spot on I would think . What is a SURVIVO MAN ? Bear with me as I am old and not up on some of the cyber characters. Thank You

Survivorman is a cable/satellite show where the host goes alone into remote areas with little equipment and survives for a week, recording what happens. The host is a perfect example of survival fitness, as he’s actually quite fit but always packs on a layer of fat before heading out.

So yes, good conditioning IS essential, but having ready supplied that don’t require handling or preparation is also nice.

Problem is, unlike Survivorman, you never know when you’re going to have to survive, so how would you know when to pack on a fat layer? My solution: always carry a modest supply pack. Not that it was part of a plan, but as long as it’s there, I might as well claim it has some function.

The survivor shows like Survivorman and Man V Wild seem to reinforce that it's the mental side of survival (including preparedness) that will be the best predictor of success/failure in outcome, much moreso than physique. Yeah, since they know that they are heading into a rough situation, they definitely do store up some energy via body fat. Food is always one of their scarcest resources to obtain. Yes, they can climb and hike like billy goats as part of their technical training. But, like people said in the thread, one never knows when a critical situation might arise. Those that can remain calm, stay positive and establish a plan seem to be the ones with the best odds of making it out the other side.

agreed! when i used to rock climb i would eat nothing but cheese, tuna, hot gypsi salami, LB'S of the stuff. Yet i would come of the rocks weighing less than when i went in and looking scrawny.

I used to run 25 or 30 miles per week for years and have run two marathons. Now I'm 57 and have a stress fracture which has curtailed my running but I'm riding the mountain bike, walking, kayak paddling, etc., to stay busy. Also, my new girlfriend is trying to get me to eat nutritiously! I need to lose 10 lbs.

Nice to see there are other guys " close" to my age on the board . The younger guys are great to keep us old guys motivated
