If you are talking a knife to truly be used for surviving in the wilderness, straight is the way to go. A straight knife can be field sharpened on a rock or stropped on a scrap of leather or animal hide. Serrated knives are a pain to sharpen even with specialized tools designed specifically for the task.

Now for a knife to keep in your car or boat, where you might expect to be cutting fibrous materials like rope or seatbelts, and field sharpening isn't an issue, serrations might not be a bad choice

Proper tool for the job at hand.

Just a random little question if any of you have a survival knife or anything...

What is your preference on a survival knife straight or serrated edge?

plain edge, I've seen video/posts where knife fails at the serrations, seems to be the weak spot.

and welcome! the Dumpster Mutt (DM) is an awesome knife, you just need to keep an eye out for one in the secondary market.

Welcome to our humble dwelling. They give us water and table scraps every night around here, and free roaming of the Scrap Yard. It's a fun place. Everyone has already answered your question, so I'll just leave it with "Welcome!".

Welcome to the yard Kiba! I concur with everyone else here on preferring plain edge over serrated. As was mentioned though, it is best to have 2 or 3 knives/tools with you if possible. I would never go full serrated but i would consider a combo edge if you must have the serrations. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

the only serrated blade I would carry is a spyderco folder. serrations on a fixed blade are about as useful to me as a kick in the butt.

The best survival knife is a combination of 2 elements in my personal opinion. A sturdy fixed blade with a quality multitool thrown in. Perhaps something like a Leatherman or SOG Powerlock containing a punch, a straight blade & a fully serrated blade. Just my two cents.
